I recently came across UO in my college search. I saw that it had a seemingly strong communications/media/journalism program-they have a database of internships (many sports related) that I was very interested in.
But I know absolutely nothing about Oregon. What's it like? The town, people, etc? I'm from NY so I probably won't be able to visit. Thanks for any help.

Oregon is a great state. Beautiful, quirky. I’d describe Eugene as a small city. The area around campus has a wonderful “college town” feel – good, cheap eats, book stores, coffee places, all that sort of thing. It’s very green (and rains a lot), there is a beautiful wide river that runs near campus, it’s politically a very liberal area, lots of music, art, etc, and lots of political and environmental activism. The sports business program and the journalism department is very developed and very popular. Lots of talent there. By NY standards it’s a pretty affordable place, good public transit (free to students), and good ethnic and vegetarian food. (Good cheeseburgers too.)

Thanks so much-very, very helpful!

rentof2. I was just accepted as a pre-journalism major but OOS tuition cost too much. Do you think UO’s journalism program is to nice to pass up?

I think journalism is a very difficult field to get decent paying work in, so although I think highly of UO, you should be very careful about how much money (especially debt) you plow into a journalism degree. I mean, I am a HUGE supporter of following your interests, your passions, so if that’s journalism for you then you should do that. Just find financially stable and responsible ways to do it. Do you have some good in-state options?

So, I’m in high school, but I’ve lived in Eugene my entire life and have grown up around the University of Oregon, a good number of my friends’ parents teach there and we all end up going to the sports games.
Here’s what I can tell you about Eugene:
It’s small. We have about 130K. Maybe.
It’s pretty seasonal. We have a reputation for wet, but we get a itty bit of snow in the winter and it gets up to 80 degrees in the summer time, sometimes hotter.
The city is pretty good. We have a decent mall, an amazing quirky downtown (especially the Saturday market!) and plenty of choices for food. Decent public transit to, but no subway, all buses. You won’t find taxis here either, for the most part.

Here’s what I can tell you about the U of O:
Football is a BIG deal.
They have a great law school and architecture program.
The dorms are terrible (for the most part, there’s a few nice ones.) You’ll probably find that at a lot of colleges.
We just built a state of the art arena that is bringing in loads of concerts xD
The school food is actually surprisingly decent.
We have a couple really amazing libraries and an awesome art museum
if you have an specific questions, I’d be happy to answer those :)

D1 is a junior journalism/PR major at the U of O. Though D1 said she’d never go here, in the end, she found it to be the most affordable option (we do pay in-state tuition) with the program she wanted. She is loving her time in Eugene. There is a student-run PR firm on campus which has given her experience. Last summer she interned in a PR-related position in New York City. She loves football, and the sport has brought a lot of attention to the university in the past couple of years. Beautiful campus. The dorms did seem very small when we toured; D1 never lived in the dorms. She is in a house not far from campus that a church sponsors. This past Tuesday, D1, D2 and I attended a Nike-sponsored tennis exhibition in the Matthew Knight Arena that brought Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova and John McEnroe to Eugene. It was amazing! With very few exceptions, she has found her professors to be very helpful and approachable. My husband is an Oregon State grad, and even he has to admit that Oregon has been a great fit for a daughter.

Hello, all. Glad to see discussions taking place. The description by 'rentof2 is pretty spot-on in terms of life and culture here in Eugene and at the UO. Here are some web links that will also be helpful…

The Living Learning center is VERY nice. I was just commenting that a lot of the older dorms aren’t as great. I have great things to say about the U of O, and yes, I do see new dorms going up all around town and the school getting better and better :)

Can anyone else, specifically UOregon, comment on the sports business program? I got admitted to the business school at oregon and I’m choosing between UO and UW’s business schools. I am really excited how someone ^^ got an internship in NY. Thats HUGE. Is is common for students to get internships in NY? or anywhere else for that matter.
Thanks.

Great questions, Greens. Your best bet to get them answered is to contact the program directly at 541-346-3297. They should be able to help you. The Warsaw Sports Marketing Center website is also extremely helpful:

Wow, I totally did not see the 2 above posts before I started a new thread on UO sports business.
