What's it like?

I was wondering what Rose Hulman is like both academically and socially. I'm looking at a lot of engineering schools and I don't know much about Rose Hulman despite its rank.
If someone currently attends there or knows anything about life there I'd like to hear.
For example I'm curious of the graduate schools people go to in engineering after Rose Hulman, the job opportunities they get as a an undergrad, the quality of their education etc. I'm also curious about the social life at a school like that which has so few students attending.
Finally I was wondering if anyone knew about Rose Hulman's openness to out of state kids (I'm from NJ). Thanks

Rose is an amazing school! That’s why they are ranked so high. Profs that work there LOVE to teach and most are very good at what they do.

My D is in her Junior year and Loves the school, the people, the admistration, and the profs. We are OOS also and there is no issues there. I would say its about 50% OOS.

As far as Academics it will be challenging thats why the school is ranked where it is. But the school offers a lot of support. Which IMO is why the school is ranked so high. If you really want to be an engineer they will give you everything to be successful at school. The Profs are more than willing to help.

Example: They have a Sophmore dorm that is full of tutors…1 or 2 per floor (and these floors are small). They have classrooms and study sessions. The Sophmore year is very hard in Engineering but they will pull you through.

The facilities are best in class. This campus is wired and up to date. They also have something called Rose Ventures, if you go for a visit DON’t miss a tour of this facility (couple miles from campus).

My D was accepted at some top schools in addition to this one, and always said she made the right decision. I have said this many times on the board, the majority of her friends that started out as engineers at other schools are no longer in engineering. They could not make it at the largers schools and it was not because they were not smart…they did not have the support of the smaller classes, the profs that have time to meet after class or the support sessions. This made is the big difference.

When choosing a school, make sure you look at these numbers. Beware, they are hard numbers to get to at other schools. Look at the students that went into engineering and graduated. Note: some schools will try to give you the Freshman Retention rate (they will also try to give you the number for students that stayed at the college but went into other majors and they may have to because they can’t make the cut in engineering)…the number of students that stayed for the beginning of their Sophmore year. Remember: its the Sophmore year in engineering that is the hardest. Rose has almost 90% graduation rate, there is only 2 other schools that are that high and there are Olin and Harvey Mudd. All the schools my D looked at were in the 30%. For the women that are looking Rose graduation rate

Like all schools there are many clubs you can get involved in or just hang out with your friends. My D has had the opportunity to join many clubs and have leadership positions.

Fell free to PM me for questions?

Great questions Ayer07! I’ll be starting junior year at Rose this fall and hopefully I can give you some answers. I’d highly recommend coming to visit Rose (and any of the schools that you’re looking at) to learn more about it. As far as social life, Rose was ranked one of the top 20 schools nationwide for “More to do on campus” by the Princeton Review. Students go to many of the top engineering grad schools each year. I don’t have the list, but if you call or email the admissions office they’d be happy to send you the list. Each year Rose places almost all of it’s graduates within six months of graduation, compared with about 35% nationwide this year. Some companies that hire a lot of Rose students are Caterpillar, Cummins Engine, Ely Lilly, NAVSEA, and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. As far as being out of state, 60% of the students are out of state. I’m from next door in Ohio, but my roommates have been from North Carolina, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. You may not know anyone at Rose from your home town, but you won’t feel out of place because you’re out of state.

Well those are some very positive reviews of the school! I did some research on my own and I have heard only good things so far. The only question now is whether I can get in. I’m going to post a couple of my stats, and maybe you guys can tell me how I look.

Academics: (My School Uses) Weighted GPA- 3.9/4.0 Unweighted is probably a 3.4/3.5
Rank - unsure, at least top 25%
In general I take the hardest classes my school has to offer including 5 years of sciences 5 years of math (through AB Calc) and 2 years of technology classes

SAT Scores- 700 math, 640 in Reading and 680 in Writing
SAT II- 720 math II, 620 US History, 650 Lit

AP Tests (so far)- 4 english lang and 4 us history

I don’t know how much RHIT cares about Extra Curriculars but I have a lot. Here’s a few

Some of the more important ones include
Varsity Track- did really well as a freshman got to junior olympics
Varsity Debate (also treasurer of the team(formally known as the forensics team)/debate trainer)
Community Service
Boys State- did a ton of stuff here
Model UN

My resume doesn’t look too much like an engineers (more political/law based) but I’m hoping that for a small school like RHIT I will look like a more diverse student. For example I’ve traveled to over 20 countries (including living abroad) in every continent (many exotic inaccessible countries) and speak 3 different languages.

So tell me what you think (reach? match? i don’t think its a safety)

^^sorry Ayer, I don’t mean to take away from your post, I was just curious as to my stats too and how I would compare… So Please! Whoever is reading this chance Ayer too.
Anyway, here are my stats:
GPA - 3.8+ unweighted and 4.689 weighted
Rank - top 3% or so (24 of 780 some kids)
I have taken at least 4 years of every core class (including Latin as a foreign language). Actually it will be 5 math and 5 science + about 4 of english, social science, etc.

ACT - 31 Composite (32 English, 35 (36 first time) math, 29 Reading, 29 (31 first time) Science) I’m retaking it once more though.

Extra-Curricular:
Mathletes (was an officer sophomore year, VP junior year, and President now senior year)
JCL (President for sophomore and junior year)+Certamen competitions
I plan to join more my senior year.

By the end of my senior year I plan to have taken these AP tests: US History - 2, Latin Literature - 1, US Gov - 4, Macroecon - 5, Eng Lang - 5, Psych - 5, Physics B & both C tests, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, Eng Lit, (possibly) Latin Vergil, Stats, Calc BC

I think I have a decently solid background, how do you think chances at RHIT will be? (Like I said though, please chance Ayer first)

Ayer and Salve, I think you both have a good chance. Rose looks primarily at what classes you’ve chosen to take and how you’ve done in them, especially math and science. Since you’ve both challenged yourselves and have good GPAs I think you’re in good shape. Of course they also look at test scores and extracurriculars and you both are in good shape there as well.
