What's JHU like?

I've visited the campus and liked it, but I didn't have a formal tour and nobody was there so I don't really know what the environment is like. I've heard from friends that they've heard (I know, sketchy, right?) that JHU has cutthroat people who eat each oth- I mean who are really really competitive. This is really important for me to know if I want to apply there. Oh and please say where you've heard this from please.

Read all the threads in the main forum and you’ll soon learn that what you’ve heard is generally untrue.

Several current engineering students have reported that the atmosphere is ultra-competitive.

Competitive is not the same as cut-throat. Anyone accepted to JHU understands competition. Several moms of current students told me: The Physics majors are very social but only with each other (same schedule of tests, projects, etc.) Same is true for BME, Pre-Med…Study groups are common. None of their children complained of cut-throat tactics and since so many of the assignments are group projects, you need to work together to succeed.

But perhaps the most telling detail was how incredibly friendly everyone on campus was to us. I observed current students, who were not part of admitted students day, stop to talk with my son, to ask him what he thought, where else was he accepted. He did the sleepover and loved the mix of people he met from current freshmen to seniors.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that the competition for awards, internships, fellowships etc isn’t intense. But that’s reality everywhere successful people work.

Good luck all.

i’m a hopkins undergraduate and it really ****es me off when people say that hopkins is “cut-throat”. i’m an english and art history double major and even when i have a LOT of work, i never feel stressed that someone is going to not let me use their study guide or give me their notes. every student here likes to study in groups and help each other achieve a common goal, an A. my friends (including my engineering, biology, and neuroscience majoring suitemates) are usually in the same boat with me in terms of a lot of homework. however, we help each other, not hurt each other. i’ve never heard of any of them having their work sabotaged. those things go down at freak shows like MIT!

MIT is not a freak show, and my H’s experience there was that it’s more the students versus the institution than each other-never had anything like that happen-

thanks for the replies, I think I’ll apply there, but I don’t know my chances

im a hopkins undergrad as well and i don’t find it to be ‘cut-throat’ at all. im tired of this generalization. it is competitive in the aspect that everyone wants to achieve and do well.
