hey everyone, Im a transfer student that may be coming to JMU in the fall 2015. I’m from NJ and currently attend a local CC. I chose to apply to JMU because of its affordability even for OOS and because of its strong ranking for my major (International Business). However I’m kind of concerned for a few reasons. 1.) I kind of skipped the whole “first year experience” thing seeing that I was a commuter at a CC. How is the social life at JMU? I’m not a huge partier but I’m pretty outgoing and am nervous about making new friends. 2.) How are the dorms? Im a pretty clean guy and would hate to be stuck with a gross roommate. Do transfers have special housing/ do we get to pick our roommates? 3.) How are the academics? I consider myself pretty smart and sometimes feel like I do better when the coursework is more intense because of the pressure, but I also don’t want to be overwhelmed. at my current CC Ive been taking 5 classes a semester which is average. Does anyone recommend taking 4 the first semester just to get accustomed to everything? If anyone could answer my questions I’d really appreciate it. And please feel free to share your personal thoughts about this place I really want to get an understanding of what JMU is like. Thanks!
Also, I keep hearing that the food at JMU is top notch. please tell me this is true.
The food is pretty great. Dorms are hit or miss amenity wise (I transferred this year. My dorm is ranked as the worst upperclassmen building), but it’s the people that make or break it, and at JMU, it’s pretty hard to go wrong people-wise. Classes are challenging, but manageable. Take at least 15 credits (I went from 24/semester at CC to 18 here at JMU). Also for the social aspect, it’s definitely there. There’s always something to do, just join groups/clubs. There’s something for everyone!
James Madison is the happiest place on Earth and you will love it here. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
