I'm just wondering, current and past students, what was life like for you at A&M? Especially during the first years? I'm considering going to A&M, but I'm not sure if I would fit in or if people there are generally unfriendly.
Also, you probably hear this a lot, but does being Asian kind of make me an outcast? I mean I have heard stories about how conservative A&M is, and I have also seen the demographics. To me, race doesn't matter, I love Asian people, black people, white people, everyone. I'm just afraid that people won't accept me. =/
Also I'm pretty shy at first, but once you get to know me I won't shut up. I've heard that people at A&M are generally really really friendly, is this true?
Anyways, any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

I’m about to be a freshman at A&M and currently experiencing their “Gig 'Em Week.”
The people here are generally very friendly, saying “Howdy” all the time. People will accept yes, but I feel that because I’m Asian, I think it kind of makes one an outcast, but eh. Haven’t seen too many other races besides white nor have I really made any real friends besides my roommate and several of the kids I already know. A&M is really conservative if I must say so myself, but there liberals here… I will know more about A&M this upcoming semester when school starts.

I personally do not like or care about A&M’s myriad of these “traditions, history, & atmosphere” since they’re very big on those things and am going to solely focus on academics and some ECs so I can potentially transfer if I’d like. Though you might do.

The community at A&M is great! its like a huge family. Although the school is generally white, I don’t feel left out and im asian as well. I went to fish camp the past few days, and everyone was really friendly. Even the upperclassmen, instead of kicking freshman out of the way helped me a lot and ive made some good friends in my dorm and from camp. The campus isn’t that hard to figure out, and if you get lost, just ask someone and they will show you the way. Its a very nice and friendly campus.

Well I can tell you right now that the Dixie Chicken smells like ****, based on one experience with it.

My 2nd son, a 3rd generation ABC (American Born Chinese) from CA is going to be a sophomore. Based on his limited opinion, race never an issue unless you make it to be. It is individuality and your personality. Because of his dorm situation, 50% of his classmates are OOS and others TEXAN of any race. Go out and make friends of your choosing. Like any large public institution, it is what you make it out to be. Conservative base on his observation is individual opinion; don’t put too much stock into it. Do your own evaluation and make your judgment after you have been there for a while not just a few weeks. Keep an open mind when you are new to the environment and do not let others color your judgment.

people at a&m are very friendly. i don’t think people care if you are asian or not. as long as you are a nice guy (or girl.)
