What are the academics, social life, extracurriculars, Baton Rouge like, etc...?

How competitive is the honors college? Whats the academic climate like? I'm thinking of majoring in something in business, but I may try and double major business with political science, do you think that is possible in 4 years? I may have around 30 credits from AP,CLEP, and CC classes by the time I get to LSU, so that would help a little, right?

Thanks

LSU is a good example of a large state flagship at approx. 30K students. So there are a lot of different opportunities regarding one's academic and social life. And plenty of extracurricular activities as well. Be sure to peruse the website.

Baton Rouge is a decent-sized metro area. It has nice and not-so-nice areas like most places. Part-time jobs are plentiful, though a car would be very helpful if you plan to travel away from campus.

You'll find some sharp cats in the Honors College. And regarding a double major, look at department websites to see how realistic that would be. Coming in with a pile of credits would definitely make it easier to accomplish.

More questions? Ask away and I'll try to answer as time permits.

Doing a swim meet at LSU this weekend. The natatorium is great. The campus is very pretty. There are lakes as you approach it, with lots of herons, egrets, and people fishing. Most kids from our high school go there, as with TOPS, many of them get a free ride. Many of them start out as sophomores because of AP and other preadmit testing they do. .

LSU is amazing. I love it there, because it feels like "home".

The academics are great. The business school I think ranks in the top 50. As for the honors college, you have to have a 27 or 28. I've heard both good and bad about the honors college from various people.

Social Life and ECS- There is lots to do on campus. My favorite thing is Sat. Night Football games at Death Valley. The atmosphere is amazing.

Baton Rouge- Nice sized city, although traffic and pollution is horrible. However, LSU does it part and recycles to lessen pollution from the plants..

"Part-time jobs are plentiful, though a car would be very helpful if you plan to travel away from campus."

^^haha, that's a nice way to put it...a car is NECESSARY in BR. Public trans virtually does NOT exist. The CATS buses that can get you around campus are fine, but don't even think about going more than 2 miles out of campus. Although, if you plan on being around campus, invest in a bike. It's worth it.

Ourso's a great B school :)

Weekends are terrible unless there is a football game going on. The campus is virtually dead. It doesn't even feel like you are at a college. The dining halls are even closed which is absolutely ridiculous.

They recommend a 30 ACT for the Honors College, but people with less are in, and some who have it were rejected due to lower English scores or something. I'm in the middle about it. It's nice to have classes with some of the brighter students, but the whole college within a college idea isn't true.

Parking is a nightmare. I don't have a car, so I pretty much hang around campus most of the time. You should be able to get rides with other people occasionally to wherever you want to go.

Political science is a BA and Business a BS, so there isn't a lot of overlap in requirements. You would probably have to go with 18 hour semesters and summer school to complete it in 4 years.

Correction: Dining halls now open on weekends.

I meant the weekends are pretty dead during the day. You will be able to find plenty to do at night.

I heard LSU fans smell like corndogs. Is that true?

Hmm, not sure if LSU fans smell like corndogs. I've been around quite a few, and if they smell like any particular food, it would probably be gumbo or barbecue. I have heard that football teams from Hawaii don't fare so well against teams from the SEC.

hahaha

It's from a book I was reading about the SEC, Dixieland Delight, the writer traveled around to each of the stadiums. When LSU was on the road, I think at Auburn, someone brought the rumor that LSU fans smell like corn dogs. And then everyone ate corn dogs just to **** the LSU fans off.

Plus how do you prove you don't smell like corn dogs?

P.S. Not that this is any better, but I'm actually a Notre Dame fan, lol

Interesting...I don't read books written by people that go around smelling sports fans. I haven't been to an LSU game before (plan to attend soon), but the students and fans look very happy to cheer on their awesome team.

Because Louisiana families are relatively not too wealthy, at least in Lafayette, a LOT of the gifted kids in Lafayette wind up at LSU. Oh, they get accepted at places like Univ of Chicago, but the financial aid often isn't there, or just isn't enough, and so they go to the LSU honors college. LSU has stiffened the requirements to advance to the upper level coursework in just about all departments now, I think you have to have a 3.0 GPA, and so students know coming in that they are going to have to work hard in order to continue in their majors.
