Whats more important SATs or GPA

I was wondering for UC’s if you place in the ELC or top 4% when you apply to a UC is your application put into a seperate “pile”. What I’m saying is your application evaluated seperately from non ELC students. And my last question is that if you place in the ELC do they not so much concern themselves with grades but more with SAT’s, because i’m in ELC but have low grades but above average SAT’s. SAT I 1450 (710 V 740 M), 660 Writing, 740 Math IIC, and 790 US Hist

the UC's do not place ELC's in a separate file....they count ELC as one factor in their comprehensive review. For example, UCI has been able to accept all ELC's in recent years, but under Comp Review since being in the top 4% of your HS class is darn good. Of course, ELC only guarantees a slot in UCSB and Merced (this year).

Good luck.

no this year it's irvine too

Both GPA and tests are important; but theoretcally, both should be balanced out (high SATs, low GPA or vice versa).

But since UCs, going by Kerr's Master Plan for Higher Education developed in the 60s, low GPA is not good...if you have a 2.8 GPA it's going to be a rough road, if not no road.

I think its both. Don't the UC's use some form of the academic index? That's what the counselors at our school tell us.

About ELC, is it just top 4% of your high school class? Or top 4% of all the applicants to that school. I've heard both, but I'm inclined to think that its the latter because the top 4% of every high school in California encompasses a lot of students. Anybody know?

The gpa-sat index is only for initial eligibility for admission, i.e., if you have a 2.8 gpa, you need a higher SAT score than someone with a 3.3 gpa. But, again, only to be eligible. After eligiblity is proven, each campus uses the scores differently in thier comprehensive review. The most clear is UCSD, which does use a formulaic process which is posted on their website.

ELC is top 4% of your individual high school class, based on UC-approved courses, and calculated under the UC method (bonus point for honors/AP).

So UC GPA is basically 10th and 11th, with an extra point for each semester of honors/AP? What if your school doesn't give extra points for honors? Will you still get points under the UC system?

The honors courses must be UC approved; your school may or may not count it as honors, but the decisions come from UC regarding the extra point for honors courses.

BOTH of course
