What's Move-In Day Look like?

I was just wondering...I'll be moving into West Campus as a transfer on August 22nd. I was wondering if it was going to just be...empty and quiet outside and inside when I get there...or what? I'll probably have to get there early (like 8 AM, right when they open) so there probably won't be that many other students...but like, I'm trying to get an idea of what to expect..

Where do we "check in" to get our room key? Inside the dorm? Are there going to be tables set up outside the dorms or something? Will there be people waiting to help? Does anyone know? lol

I wouldn't imagine it would be as lively as North Campus, right?

its actually pretty lively and there will be signs and orientation staff directing you where to go. trust me you have nothing to worry about.

you'll get a set of instructions by the end of july or early august...

since you will move in on aug 22nd to west it will probably be emptier than north campus will...

Does it look like a scene from Cloverfield or I am Legend in which people are rushing, carrying all their belongings, in a car? lol.

I actually felt it was surprisingly organized. I got there promptly at 8 and was in line for 30 minutes...but once it was my turn to unload, the OL helped me moved in and they had all of my stuff upstairs within 10 minutes.

What is an OL?

OL = orientation leader

In line? Where do you stand in line?

More abbreviations:
RA - Resident Advisor
RHD - Residence Hall Director
JA - Judicial Administrator (you don't want to know about this one!)

I see..

But like do we stand in line outside and check in or something...or is it inside? We don't carry our own stuff up? What do our parents do while we move-in since someone else is carrying?

We moved our daughter in last year and she will be one of those people to help out this year. It was very organized last year. You go to your dorm at your assigned time, not before. Volunteers, like my daughter, would actually move everything for you in less than .5 hour. Not to worry if your dad or brother couldn't come with you, there will be plenty of people to help you move. What's helpful is to label all of your boxes with your name, dorm, and room number.

There is a line of cars...that's the line I referred to. You and a parent will help the OL move your things and the other parent waits in the car. Once all of your belongings are in the room you go park the car on the slope and then go back to unpack your stuff.

Ack..I only have one parent, and she's the only one going with me. What do I do?

She can wait in the car and you can help the OL with your stuff....she won't have to wait long.

has anyone/is anyone signed up to do freshmen fest through hillel. im not very religious (at all) but im happy to have the oppurtunity to move in a day early. does anyone know what move in on aug 21 is like?

Never heard of it - but I would embrace any opportunity to move in a day earlier!

I signed up to do freshmen fest, and I'm also not very religious, see ya there.

How do you sign up for it?

there is a form somewhere on the hillel website, and then you have to send a 75 dollar check to them

I'm coming in from California, alone, I was planning on shipping most of my belongings the day before I fly out. Is there a better way to do it so that I can have most of my things with me on the 22nd?

I am not sure how this is going to work out logistically, my sign-in time is the earliest one, should I catch a really early flight to Ithaca or is there a way to arrive the night before? How about transportation to the campus from the airport, is this arranged by Cornell or are we all on our own?
