I would bring your clothes, computer, personal stuff with you. Buy everything else once you get to Cornell. You could take a bus to the mall, then get a taxi to take you and your purchase back to your dorm. If you want to ship your belongings, I would ship them to get there before the 22nd. You'll need to pick them up where your mail box is located, they won't deliver to your dorm. You probably could get some parents to drive you on the 22nd. I would get in a day early, stay at a hotel that has a shuttle to Cornell. It may be a bit late now to get a room for the 21st. You are on your own to get from the airport to Cornell. You could fly into Syracuse or Ithaca.

What does Move-In Day Look like? Not What's.

In previous years, this company Big Red Shipping & Storage had a special arrangement with Cornell where incoming freshmen could ship things to them in advance and the company would deliver them to the freshman dorm rooms before the students arrived. It was a bit pricey, and you had to ship quite early, but it may be convenient for some people. The information about the service is not up on their Web site yet, but you might be able to e-mail them to find out whether they're offering it this year. I do not know whether the same service is offered for transfers.

Move-in day last year was amazingly efficient, at least on North Campus, where the freshmen live. I was the only person accompanying my daughter, and I was recovering from a leg injury at the time and couldn't lug things up and down the stairs. I didn't have to. All I had to do was help unload the car outside the dorm and then drive it to a periphery lot and walk back. (There were buses available for people who had to walk to really distant dorms.) By the time I got back to the dorm (less than half an hour later), my daughter and all her possessions (including the stuff we had shipped using the service mentioned above) were in her room. And my daughter had only carried up her laptop and musical instrument. Everything else was brought up by the move-in day volunteers.

Things do get delivered to wrong rooms sometimes, though, so every bag or box you bring should be labeled with the student's name, dorm, and room number.

sorry to bring up an old thread, but if you do choose to ship boxes to Cornell through USPS, what happens to them when they arrive?

Are they kept at a central location? Are they accessible once you get on campus? What if they arrive a day early?

My mother is freaking out about the entire shipping thing.
And it isn't feasible for us to just buy all our new stuff once we get up there. We need to ship my regular clothes, and all of the winter clothes we bought at a discount during the summer.

By the way, if it makes any difference, I live in Miami.

You won't need your winter clothes for at least two months. Why lug them up now?

just to get it all in and settled, and not have to worry about it later.

chendrix...pack your things in boxes and ship them to your dorm address

Your Name
Cornell University
Dorm Building Name, Room #
Ithaca, NY 14853

you can pick them up at your designated mail service centers and pick up the items with a valid student ID...

they will be very busy at the start of the semester so maybe wait to ship your other clothes? do bring a suitcase with you just in case there's a delay..

What do people use to carry their stuff? Boxes? Plastic bags? I feel like I am going to have a lot of stuff and I have no idea how I will get it organized to move into my room.

Boxes, suitcases and trunks...

Boxes usually..

It can be taken to your room on a cart with the help of the OL's, where you will just unpack everything, recycle the cardboard and organize stuff into your room...

Carry your things in a container that can either be thrown away or can be reused, either as a seat/table/or useful container. Don't waste space on your floor storing suitcases and other things.

I used plastic tubs that I later stacked or used and stored under my bed. Keep in mind that whatever you move in you will have to move out at the end of the year...

When is the soonest items can arrive at dorm address at Cornell? When mail ordering something, it seems a tad silly to ship home then drive it up there, but don't want to wait till the last minute for some of the orders.
Thanks in advance.

you're from upstate new york for chrissakes! D:

i assume you're driving there...so unless you're ordering a futon or something...i dont see the problem...just pack it along :D

i bet that there's a waiting time to get your packages...you'll have to wait for it to be processed, a pick-up slip put in your mailbox and then lug it back to your room D:

Um, you've never seen our car with our daughter's stuff! Crowded is an understatement. ;-) I'm more concerned with ordering now, have it get there next week and they say that person doesn't live here, reject package. If they'll keep it, great.

the new students orientation guide should address this issue of shipping...if you did not get your copy you can download it from the Cornell website...I believe that you can not just ship things without making prior arrangements thru Big Red Shipping...which charges a storage and delivery fee...this is explained in the guide...

it didn't say anything about not being able to ship through services other than Big Red Boxes.

It only included an advertisement for BRBs

sorry - didn't mean to imply that you could not ship by other carriers- only that I am pretty sure things can not arrive before you move in unless you use BigRed for storage ...there is no acceptance of boxes until after move-in...

true memphismom...big red boxes is the only way you can get your boxes to be in your room when you arrive...

if you ship through UPS or USPS you will have to pick up the stuff at your designated mail center and lugg it up the dorm to your room...

you cant have things arrive early but they can arrive on the day of or after move-in...so bring the essentials and ship the stuff that can wait..
