Right now you have only a 3.4 UW GPA which is far below the average of 3.8 and the median of 3.9. Until you get those test scores (34 ACT and 1500 SAT – which happen to be in the 98th percentile) then it is really hard to chance. That being said, if your courseload “is not the best” than it is not gonna look good to have that low of a GPA.
Say that I do attain the ACT and SAT scores, as well as attain leadership positions for some of the clubs, will I have a good chance? And I also read on the NYU Stern Average Undergraduate GPA is a 3.5.
I want to optimistic and I’m determined to get Straight A’s. I don’t know any other schools similar to NYU Business schools that are in my range on the East Coast.
And if I apply to CAS for NYU ED, will I stand a better chance of majoring in economics, minoring in Math, and try to internally transfer to Stern the next year?
Even with those test scores your GPA will more than likely ruin your chances of getting accepted. NYU as a whole once said their average GPA for the entire school was “3.5+”, so not only is yours below average for Stern, which used to be listed as 3.74 (but has since been taken off the website for whatever reason), but it’s also lower than NYU as a whole. Also, even with a 1500 SAT, it’s only slightly above the median of 1470. If you work really hard on your essays and EC’s, you’ll have a higher chance of getting accepted, but that GPA may be your downfall unfortunately. I did get in with a below-average GPA but it wasn’t nearly as low as yours and I had essays that I worked on for months.
As for applying to CAS, you should have a much higher chance of getting in IF you get those standardized test scores. However, even if you do, you shouldn’t only go just to transfer to Stern. It’s difficult; and if you’re rejected, you’re stuck at a school paying huge sums of money for that you were never really interested in in the first place. Be prepared to have a backup plan that you’d be satisfied with if something goes wrong.
@adreamer22 Thanks for your response, I’ve read some other threads and internally transferring is very hard and I would more than likely need to stay in CAS.I don’t know what to do with an Economics Degree though. I know I am going to do an MBA, but as for intern jobs,I don’t know. Anyways, will ED help for my cause? I will try to get leadership positions for my EC’s. NYU is my dream school and I don’t want to go to any other schools.
Yes I think ED is your best bet. Economics is still a very solid degree to possess, and you’ll still be able to get internships/job opportunities with it.
One of the main problems with applying to Stern with CAS as your second choice is that CAS does NOT like Stern’s scraps, so if you focus your application on Stern, which you SHOULD to optimize your chances of getting accepted, your chances for CAS go down due to your seemingly lack of interest in the school. You must make a calculated risk.
@adreamer22 I’ve decided to put CAS as my first choice and have Stern as my backup. I’m scared of the financial aid of NYU, especially since I’m doing ED. I know my family won’t be able to pay for it and since I am going to do an MBA, I don’t know. As of right now, I am going to try my best for CAS econ.
Well good luck! If you don’t get inot CAS there’s almost no possibility of getting into Stern, unfortunately. Also if you’re applying ED and the FA isn’t good enough, you can break the ED agreement due to your inability to comfortably pay.
Oh ok, thanks for your responses, they helped me out a lot, you might’ve just saved me from getting rejected from Stern, one last question, do I stand a solid chance for admission into CAS with my current EC’s or will it be even better if I acquire some leader ship positions? @adreamer22
@landon2800 You have a lot of EC’s but I’d agree try to get a leadership position in at least one club and emphasize that/those clubs in your application.
Also your senior classes will appear on your transcript, so don’t skimp out on classes senior year.
Oh ok, thank you, and if I put CAS as my first choice, and then LSP as my second option, will I be guaranteed to get into LSP? I have seen that the LSP students have much lower test scores and GPA than Stern, Cas, Etc. I want to know if I have a nearly 100% chance of LSP. Thank you. @adreamer22
Don’t put LS as your secondary choice just to get into NYU. It’s a different way of learning than CAS and they’re looking for students who are willing to put in the work and who are global thinkers. It’s not a backdoor into NYU, and we don’t have “much lower test scores and GPA”. If you’re willing to put in the work into the LS experience to get the most out of it, go for it, but if you want to make sure you have a 100% chance of LS so you can get into NYU and then complain about how different the classes are for two years before transferring into CAS, don’t try it.
My goal is to get into NYU, I don’t know for certain if I will make it in to CAS, and Stern is definetly a no with my low expected UW GPA, I don’t really care about the kinds of classes at LSP but I just want to get into NYU. From threads I’ve heard that LSP students may have low GPA’s but high SAT’s, Vice Versa. I want to end up in business and Stern as a backup to CAS won’t really be a backup bc I know I have very little chances to get in, LSP sounds like it is easier to get in. What’s your perspective @seeniebeenie
@vineyardvines I was looking through the NYU admissions thread and saw that you were accepted into LSP/CAS. I was wondering if you would be able to chance me bc I am applying ED 1 to CAS and LSP as my second choice.

@NYUCAS2020 Sorry for having to put you on my thread but I saw the admissions thread for NYU and I wanted to ask you what my chances were to get in because I believe I will end up with the same GPA as yours, I also have excuses as to why my GPA is low. My stats are above.
@adreamer22 I recalculated and my UW GPA would be a 3.53 and my weighted would most likely be near a 3.4
