What's my next step?

I've been a member of fastweb for quite some time (when I was still in high school), but I don't seem to have any luck in winning any scholarships that I have applied for. Are there other sites or suggestions on what I should do now?

Thanks

We haven't had any luck with fastweb either. I think it is a great site, but because it is so well-known, the scholarships listed there attract a large number of applicants. Thus, only the truly outstanding have a good chance to win much there. (and the excellent essay writers, perhaps) My sons have been able to win small ($500 a year) scholarships through their dad's local union. My younger just won $500 through his college, in addition to the $4000 a year he was awarded by the college after acceptance. The $500 was through a separate application for a number of scholarships offered. He has also applied to our state scholarship fund, but has not yet heard on those.

It is frustrating, I know. My son has a great GPA and is a wonderful guy, but he just doesn't seem to have whatever it is--perhaps community service, perhaps some particular type of leadership, I don't know--that the scholarship people are looking for. Since it sounds like you are already in college, have you considered applying to be a Resident Assistant in a dorm? My son, a sophomore this coming year, will be doing that. Pay varies at different colleges, but my son will receive free room and board, plus $1200 a year. It does require a big time commitment, but pays better than a part-time job.

Thanks for the response.

Unfortunately the deadline to apply as being an RA has passed 6 months ago. The payment is free room and board with no stipend, and considering dorms cost $12,000 for a double room, it is a great deal! However, the time commitment doesn't worry me, but what worries me is whether I can be just as good as my freshmen year RA and make it a great experience for the freshmen.

Well, it might be something for you to consider for the next year. However, I agree, it is not for everyone. Only you can decide if it is worth trying. Perhaps you could find some other part-time job? I don't know what is available where you are, but there should be some kind of work.

It is hard. We have tried to help our son all we can, but he still has to take out some loans every year. He would prefer to have an apartment with friends, but he will be an RA to help with costs. I admit to feeling a twinge of envy whenever someone posts about receiving a free ride to some great college. I wish there were some easier way I could share with you, but I don't know of one.

I am working at two locations this summer and through next year. I'm helping as much as I can to pay for tuition and rent without jeopardizing grades. I just wish one of the scholarships I applied would go through and send me the good news... but it hasn't happened yet.

Your son will learn so much by being an RA. Congrats! I will definitely apply for the year after.
