What's necessary to be in contention for scholarship (LONGGG...)

I've posted this before, but did not receive a response.

I know that I definitely did not turn in Part II of my online application by Dec. 11 and I don't believe I had a counselor recommendation/high school transcript sent in by then either. I only had completed Part I of the online application and had my SAT scores sent by then.

However, I received the "No Scholarship" Letter from Admission and Financial Aid which I'm completely fine with seeing as how I never expected myself competitive enough to receive Trustee or Presidential.

What was needed to be turned in by Dec. 11 to be considered for scholarship? Does the Presidential scholarship for National Merit Finalist (which I was just notified of today) require a completed application by the Dec. 11 deadline also? (There's no mention of that on the website.)

Ironically, receiving the "No Scholarship" letter actually made me seem like I could still be in contention for the National Merit Finalist Presidential scholarship. I highly doubt I would attend USC without merit aid. Does everyone who applied to USC get the "No Scholarship" letter? or just those who were considered for scholarships in the first place?

Thanks!

Part 2 of the online application. Supplementary materials needed to be sent as close to then as possible (there was a bit of leniency). I think the Part 2 deadline was pretty firm.

I believe so, as it is a merit-based scholarship, but I am not 100% sure.

No idea, but I'd like to know as well.

Ooh, I like what you said about the part of leniency... except I think I turned my Part II of the application like a little over a week late... I started my USC application like in August, haha, and I just forgot about it since I wasn't really even sure if I wanted to attend USC, but then I learned about the half tuition for NMF and that recaptured my interest. Hopefully you're right about the leniency idea. The only sure thing I could say is that everything was in by the end of January... like I think I had Part II in at around Dec. 20 (give or take) and had my transcript sent during winter break even though I asked for it to be held until I had my counselor recommendation. Actually... I don't even know if I ever even had the counselor recommendation turned in. My counselor might just have turned that in for me, since I already had her write me one for NMF... Yeah, my USC application is kind of all random, but I guess USC would've asked me to send in missing stuff right, if they didn't have it... I'm planning on calling on Monday to sort everything out. Thanks for replying though.

Yeah, definently call them and make sure. What I meant about leniency was that the supplemental material they were lenient with. It was supposed to be post-marked by Dec 11th, but I know some of my stuff was a couple days after that and I still qualified for the Dec 11th deadline. The Part 2 application I don't think they were lenient with, since it was submitted online and there should be no 'excuse' for submitting it late (whereas for the other parts of the application they need to be lenient to take into account bad mail companies).

Hrmm... alright. Well, hopefully the NMF Presidential doesn't require the Dec. 11 deadline then.

Just those that applied by the Dec. 11th deadline.

That's good news for spoilme then!

Sweeett... I actually had the Part II done by Dec. 18, so I guess they had a one week grace period... but just to make me feel a bit better, is there any support ffor your statement sfgiants?

Admissions office told me that all applicants who applied by Dec. 11 got this letter if they did not receive a presidential or trustee scholarship. They may have also included those who had only submitted part 1- you'll have to call to ask. Depending on who you talk to, you may get a different answer so you may not know for sure even if you do call!

Thanks, I like the answer you received. Hopefully I'll get the same response. 2/2 would be pretty convincing for me.

It seems silly that the people who submitted Part 1 of the application would get scholarship consideration. The deadline for Part 1 was in November, I believe, and the website said that if you didn't submit it, don't worry because it's only helps out the office of admissions with processing. It explicitly stated that it doesn't give you an edge for admissions, nor with scholarships.

As for the supplementary material, there definitely was leniency. Mine materials were sent out on December 16th. But I would think they rigidly adhere to the December 11th deadline for Part 2. I don't know the hour (I'd assume midnight Pacific time), but December 18 is wayyy too late.

As for NMF, I really have no clue. But why are you asking this if you got a letter stating you are no longer being considered for the NMF presidential scholarship?

Well, the letter doesn't state anything about the NMF presidential scholarship. The letter just says...
"I am sorry to say that you were not selected for further consideration for either of these two scholarships... In addition, if you are admitted, named a National Merit Finalist and choose USC as your first-choice institution, you will receive a USC Presidential scholarship."

It doesn't really say anything about having to have had turned in Part II of the application online by Dec. 11.

In addition, if you check the website, every scholarship opportunity explicitly states that the conditions of receiving consideration for the scholarships require a complete application by Dec. 11, EXCEPT for the NMF Presidential scholarship.

All the NMF scholarship states is that "Application Process: Students will be contacted by the sponsoring agency."

Ah...! This confused me:

Best to call and find out since website doesn't really say much.

Yeah, I didn't really know how to word it. I had lost hope for scholarship until I received the letter telling me I couldn't get it. I know it's weird.

NMF does not require the dec. 11 deadline. You just have to be accepted and name USC as your first choice school. Good luck!

Those are exactly the words I want to hear!

Momofchris, do you have personal experience with this? or any proof to that?

(Not that I doubt you, it would just be 100% relieving for you to tell me that your own son missed the deadline, but still received the scholarship... or something like that.)

National Merit Finalist Presidential

Amount: Half tuition (approximately $16,750)

Number of Awards: Varies

Selection Criteria: Selected on the basis of PSAT performance. Entering freshmen are considered if they have been designated as National Merit Finalist and name USC as their first-choice college with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Application Process: Students will be contacted by the sponsoring agency.

Notification: April 2, 2007

Note that it does not say you have to apply by December 11, like the other scholarships!

Yeah, that's what I thought too. Hopefully, that's how it works out!
