What's New Haven really like?

Just wondering what New Haven is really like as it has the reputation of being an unsafe city/area around Yale. Do Yale students leave campus frequently to go into New Haven?
Are there any issues with safety at Yale due to the city of New Haven?

I was there for a few months over the summer, so I’m not sure if that’s the same as in the school year.

My impressions were that while it’s decidedly not as nice as the campus, it’s not as bad as it was made out to be. People went into New Haven all the time, and it never felt unsafe. The farther you go from campus, the worse and less friendly it gets, but the areas where most students went were nice enough and not bad.

well yale borders a decently bad area and you do hear of muggings and things (the schools actually emails you when one occurs, so its not like every day of course) but new haven is really nice in general. the area around the green is nice, a little sketchy at night. broadway is perfectly fine

As in any city, there will always be places you won’t want to venture into, but Yale has totally fine security and the “college town” feel has really been growing, especially with Broadway.

This is what New Haven looks like on a good day:

i didn’t apply to yale or anything but i live 10 minutes from new haven. personally, i’m in new haven most weekends and sometimes weekdays because around here that’s really all there is. once you get to the edge of campus at dixwell ave towards hamden it gets pretty bad but otherwise i’ve never felt unsafe walking throughout new haven (outside of campus) at night. there are worse cities.

Anywhere you’re likely to spend time will be just fine. There are definitely not so good neighborhoods if you want to walk a ways off campus, but what would you do there? Just about everything interesting in new haven is on or near the campus.

Do yale students even need to/want to go into New Haven?

pvsheehan, have you visited Yale yet? It’s smack in the middle of New Haven.

I visited New Haven for about a week… I think that if you stay in campus for the majority of the time it should be fine. Areas far, far, FAR away from campus look a little suspicious, but seriously, New Haven is NOT as bad as people make it out to be. I don’t get why people worry so much about it anyway?! I’d be much more worried going into a big city like Philadelphia or Los Angeles.

If you drive out a little, there’s a pleasant beach/shore, too :). It’s hard to find parking sometimes, though.
