Many of the semifinalist who only receive 10-14K offers from Emory are amazingly accomplished students who will get VERY generous scholarships in other very good universities....and many of them will turn down Emory
.....it is Emory's loss.

I was a no, but got $14000 LAS, which I thought was quite nice. Emory Scholars is a tough selection process and the kids who advance are usually so awesome, I was honored and shocked to be selected as a semi. Unfortunately, it is not enough for this middle income kid. Good luck to all! Emory is a GREAT school!

haha isleofthedeep, I had myself in the 2/3 range too, but I didn't even make semi! :)

well at least it's a bit of a humility inducer

i got 10k which is basically the smallest scholarship they give, right?
emory & me = a relationship gone afoul.

ps I just got my mailed letter todya, which seems to be later than everybody else

john - haha if you remember, packer, rabidsquirrel, and I also got our semi rejection letters really late. (shrugs) emory and I are going through counseling right now...we'll see what happens.

congrats on getting something; sorry if it's not enough for you to be able to go =/

I guess we can console each other then. ;)

I basically sent an email to my regional admissions officer to ask if something happened to my app. What I got was a highly boiler-plate response. Oh well, c'est la vie.

Boiler-plate? Haha, like the image in your head when you read it, it's like a fat-man-with-tomato-red-face-sputtering-spit boiler plate? =)

Anways, I've never quite figured out what went wrong...but I mean, there was a kid with great stats, 2360 sat score, etc. etc. and he didn't even make semifinalist. Gotta count your blessings...I'm thankful I'm not more talented, so it was easier for me to take the blow.

did he lie about an EC, bad rec, crappy essays, or something?

i too, can't figure out what went wrong, and that, not the money, is the scariest thing for me.

"c'est la vie" ??? I haven't a clue about the meaning of that, but I'm going to assume it is a very witty comeback towards the emory folks

No, it means "that's life." Geez, don't they teach French in Ohio? :)

And boiler-plate means like generic, copied from the letter, etc.

"C'est la vie" means something along the lines of "Such is life" - kinda like "crap happens, oh well", except more elegant.

I think also the essays play a huge role in the selection, and even if you have excellent stats and write about how you want to be a successful plain lawyer, you don't come off as promising as a lower stat person who talks in broad strokes about how she wants to use her discipline to introduce changes for the betterment of mankind. She would come off as more of a person who will ultimately make a mark and spread Emory's name, than the guy who just wants to settle down and be happy with all his money.

I could be completely off base here, though.

I'm halfway convinced it's my stats that prevented me from advancing to finalist...I was surprised to even make semifinalist...top 4% class rank, 3.76 gpa (at the time I applied...this is barely over Emory's average unweighted gpa of 3.75), and 33 ACT...right at Emory's 75%ile...I was SO surprised to learn that I had been selected as an Emory Scholars Semifinalist, but I wish my school hadn't taken so long in recalculating class ranks...as I'm now 5th in my class...oh well...I still got a $12000/year scholarship to Emory and I'm happy about receiving that!!

Stats are not everything. I had a 33 ACT and was selected as a finalist. On the other hand, I wrote my essay on my desire to return home after medical school to practice in my rural community. I think just having something about you to stand out weighs much more heavily than 2400 SAT, Valedictorian, etc etc.

haha john - I dunno what was wrong with his app. my scores/ec's were pretty strong..and essays were as well, but I think my why emory was more on the bland side, which may have been it. shrugs second-guessing so too hard...c'est la vie. :)

ahh boiler-plate...yeah they do tend to give those.

PS. If I end up at Emory, I'm probably going to try for Dean's Acheivement after freshman year...hopefully...haha

I was a LA Scholarship $10k stopped at semi-finalist last year. However fin aid letter also awarded me another 5k grant. Emory was pretty generous I thought given my family EFC. I ultimately didn't choose Emory, but they made it very hard.

azn... how much is the Dean's? is it easier/harder to get compared to finalist?
hssenior... what was you EFC/family income (range would be nice)

dean's achievement is 10k, and you can apply as a freshman. it's supposedly based on good grades and involvement in community..and scholars cannnot apply. however, I would think it's still pretty challenging to get, especially since many brilliant people who were disadvantaged based on test scores/low freshmen gpa/etc. etc. in high school now have a chance to start over and shine. shrugs

Emory College | Current Students | Goodrich C. White Scholarships

great perk is that you are then considered a full emory scholar (yay!), but problem is that most LAS people will probably apply too. I'd probably guess that competition for these scholarships may be even tighter than for original scholars...

wouldn't it be easier since scholars aren't eligible? so the brightest people are out of the running.

well, a lot of bright people recieved LAS and/or didn't even make it...plus there may be people who are handicapped by their standardized scores but will make up for it with brilliant contributions and grades once SAT's no longer matter.

shrugs

I mean, even there are a lot of people who "should" have made scholars, but didn't, and they'll be wanting 10k if they can get it.
