Do final exam grades go on the transcript?

Highs schools format their transcripts differently. You should check with the specific school.

What about high school your area?

D's high school

Courses listed by term, number of credits, final grade, semester average
NYS regents exam scores,
EC's,
Overall GPA
Courses taken in J.H.S. for High School Credit
College courses that were given H.S. credit, school, term grade

Get a copy of your transcript, easy to do.

My high school only lists term grades and year averages, not final exams. I know this because I asked after I, um, didn't do so well on my math exam...

At our high school, classes and final grades in that class are listed by term. Any college class taken for high school credit is listed.

GPA and class rank are listed--academic unweighted, academic weighted, cumulative unweighted, cumulative weighted, Grades 10-12 unweighted, Grades 10-12 weighted.

No ECs or test scores listed on the transcript, although until last year, SAT scores were listed on the transcript.

Our school lists all courses taken over all high school years (even if taken at local cc or trade-off AP courses at neighboring high schools), grades for all 4 quarters, plus mid-term and final exam grades, and end-of-year final grades, credit received for each course, SAT/ACT scores, class rank/total class number, and total absences and late arrivals each year.

It is not a big deal to have a teacher print out an unofficial transcript and you should do it every year, just to check to make sure no mistakes are on it.

Getting an official one (like the one you will send with college applications) requires going to the school registrar and ordering one. At our HS, the first couple are free--after that there is a charge.

Does an individual element matter?

My S graduated this past weekend and we got his final quarter (and end-of-12-years-in-the-County transcript) at the same time we got his diploma...

He had a very tough fourth quarter this year...started with bruised ribs after being thrown from a galloping horse and ended with a badly broken ankle, requiring surgery...he missed a TON of school fourth quarter...his semester & year and quarter grades, however, stayed strong...he got one B+ in a semester long college-level math course and a B+ quarter grade (but an A year-long grade) in one other course (all the rest remained As)..BUT he got two Cs on final exams (which show on his record)...will he have to explain this to his college? (Cornell)?

Personally, I am incredibly proud of how well he did under some very adverse circumstances...I think it will be easy to explain if an explanation is required...but it'd be nice to know if an explanation will be required...anyone know?

Congratulations,

I think your son also did well under some very adverse cirumstances (hope that he is well on the way to being 100%).

The final exam grades are not going to kill him. It does not sound like he finshed with C's in the course. Everything should be ok. Given his situation, the GC could always put a note explaining what happened when s/he sends the final transcript to the school. If it gives you peace of mind to have it explained, then you should ask for a note to be sent also.

Good advice if you're worried. On the other hand, most schools won't care unless you get lots of Cs for the final grade and/or the Cs are in classes your son is trying to place out of through AP or tests administered at the school. Then an explanation would be helpful.

Thanks...the Cs are final exam grades in courses in which he got a final grade of A for the year...shouldn't be a problem, but easy enough to ask that an explanatory note be included in the transcript...plus, COrnell knew about his ankle; we asked for an extension (which he wound up not using) of the May 1 decision date...and Cornell called his HS to verify my story (I'd called to tell them of his injury and surgery)...so they do know the situation...I think I'll stop worrying...go back to focusing on extra long twin sized sheets!

Thanks a lot for your input...

I've noticed your son goes to TJ, and since I graduated there not too long ago myself ;), I thought I'd mention that the transcript exactly as is is included w/ the diploma.

The final exam grades should only appear on the final report card, the transcript should just have the final marks.

Nothing to worry about!

sealocust, from what i've heard, some districts do in fact put the final exam grade on the transcript as well as the report card. there was some talk in my district of going to a similar system, but i have no idea where that stands right now. i guess now that i've graduated, it won't affect me. even then...

Bless you SeaLocust! I obviously should have looked more closely (graduation day was a marathon...got up at 4 on Sat; did a grad party; did graduation; did the all-night grad party...looked at the diploma (and accompanying paperwork) when I got home at 5 a.m. Sunday...Obviously wasn't seeing straight!

Did you graduate this past Sat? (I loved the ceremony...particularly Governor Warner--our keynote speaker--he had two pieces of advice for the graduates: don't be afraid to take risks, even if you fail; and don't forget to call your mother...LOVED it!!!)...

Definitely time to focus on extra long sheets!

karthikkito: I have my final transcript sitting infront of me, as it will be mailed to colleges. No final exam marks :)

Overanxious_mother: I did infact! I found it rather boring, but I expected that, so... oh well. Still cool to be an alumni now...

awesome...looks as if your district [fairfax?] hasn't gone insane! =)

The final exams at my high school goes on the transcript. o.o;

Our school's transcript lists the year-end grade in each subject, which includes the averaged-in final exam grade; the NY Regent's Exam grades; high school-level courses taken in middle school; attendance record; and some stuff I'm not really sure belongs on the hs transcript, namely SAT/ACT and AP scores. According to my kids, students can ask to have their scores removed from the transcript. This doesn't matter much now that score choice is a thing of the past, I suppose. Still, it surprises me that the high school would include this info without each student's specific permission to do so.
