What's so bad about UC Riverside?

What's so bad about UCR? .... seriously, why do so many people bash UCR? is it the worst out of all the UC's .... why?

From everything i heard, its the area, not the school or quality of education.

It is by no means the worst. It just doesn’t have as prestigious of rank as other UC schools with more notoriety. UCR isn’t in a great area. Riverside is kind of in a crappy and slightly ghetto area. The weather can be super hot and there is a ton of traffic. Honestly though, I would have no problem going there. They have great professors and depending on your major, they have great programs. They have an awesome natural science dept. and are adding a medical school. The campus has been remodeled and updated and is really nice as well as enormous.
People just don’t like the area and since it has lower requirements, it isn’t has hard to get into therefore not as special. I wish they would raise their gpa requirements and get tougher and make a name for themselves. Outside of the less than desirable area, there is really nothing wrong with it.

UCR has some stigma attached to it that isn’t fair probably. I agree that a lot of it has to do with it’s location. I’m not sure about this, but i think UCR’s campus isn’t nearly as nice as some of the other ones either. That being said Riverside is a good school, just has no glamor to it. And is glamor important to you when deciding on a school?? I wish i could say it isn’t for me, but i think it does plays a role in my thinking :/, for better or for worse.

Before they just admitted everyone. But now they are becoming more selective and even rescinding people. I agree that the area isn’t the greatest, but other aspects of the school such as accessibility of professors, research opportunities, and chill atmosphere somewhat makeup for it. It’s a place where you cam really do well and have the opportunity to become successful if you put in a little effort.

To be honest, as a freshman at ucr I already hated the school based on what I had heard. However, I quickly learned that it isn’t that bad. It isnt a UCLA or UCSD but it def isnt a school for rejects. I decided to transfer out only because of family matters.

I live in Riverside and hate it! BUT, I will tell you this. The city is just as boring as Irvine except that Irvine has a beach and the weather is about 7 degrees more over here than there on average. Oh and they have really nice malls in the OC but even those get boring fast. The traffic in the OC is WORSE now that the whole 20 year freeway construction projects here are finally over. This used to be the road-rage capital of america but I hardly hit traffic anymore except during certain hours of the day in certain spots.

It used to be the worst of UC’s but now UC Merced has taken that spot and as of this year (or last?), UCR will no longer accept the left-over applicants automatically (Used to be UCR and UCSC together but UCSC stopped a while ago UCR just stopped and now UCM will take over). From what I always hear, people here are overall less d-o-u-c-h-y than UCI (I just love comparing the 2 since I’m so close to both).

UCR’s med school just opened up ( [UCR: Medical school research building unveiled on campus | Local News | PE.com | Southern California News | News for Inland Southern California](http://www.pe.com/localnews/stories/PE_News_Local_D_medschool19.17a1e97.html) )and they have been steadily rising in the rankings so this will boost them up even more. Start expecting the dumber UC kids start to slowly phase out as smarter and smarter classes join in. Another reason their rankings are kinda low is probably because they didn’t even have an engineering school till the 90s. My dad told me the story since he was a Physics professor there at the time.

I’ve seen this school throughout my life and it always looked REALLY cool to me but still a bit crappy before. NOW, they just finished building like 10 new buildings and a lot of the older buildings that looked crappy are gone. The campus is much better looking than UCSB (buildings wise. People at SB are still more attractive, there’s still that beach, and that kickin party scene). Oh and I like that UCR’s campus is pretty big in size.

Oh, and this is still the closest campus to go snowboarding from. Mt. High is 35 minutes away. The beach is like 45 mins away.

I don’t know much about UCR but they’re ranked somewhere in the 90’s by US News and World Report (as in 90 somethingth best school in the nation) whereas schools like SD and SB are in the 30’s.

i agree with the above posts. i have family in riverside and i HATE driving out there. Soooo much traffic, and so little to do in riverside. That being said, it’s still a UofC school so it’s at least decently impressive (we have the best public university system of any state imo) they just need to do more to bring up their rankings (i expect them to come up pretty soon)

It’s a good school, but others are better… but still UCR doesn’t suck!

it’s pretty much the area that makes UCR seems as a bad place.UCR is located almost going to the desert.Yet,in academics is starting to get wayyy better.I heard rumors that UCR has an extension to UCLA med school if you graduated from UCR so I’m kinda mad that I didn’t apply to UCR.

Unfortunately they DID have the UCR/UCLA med school bridge, which was what made UCR a better school than UCLA or Berkeley, if you were interested in attending medical school. However, with the new UCR medical school, that program is going to get cut, and will go directly to the UCR med school rather than the UCLA med school. One of UCR’s biggest mistakes…

Location, location, location!

“It used to be the worst of UC’s but now UC Merced has taken that spot and as of this year”

wow people… UCR and UCM are great schools

and how can you call a 6 year old college the worst??? It has hardly had a chance to make a mark and here you are passing judgements.

to the OP

getting into any UC school is a great thing, the stigma attached to UCR and UCM to me are quite unfair. As many others have noted the only thing about UCR is its location. (I’ve been there several times)

Its hot, the neighborhood isnt that great, and the weather leaves alot to be desired. But the school itself is fine.

@ Patrick thats not really a mistake. UCR’s school will be newer and probably better equipped. The only thing missing from UCLA will be the name. What’s wrong with a school making a name for itself?

Considering the budget crisis I wouldnt be surprised if the average GPA for freshman went up to around 3.6 in the next few years.

Also taking into account the new medical school…I say UCR breaks the top 60 in the next decade.

I don’t get how riverside catches flak for its location, but davis doesn’t

@Patrick_Bateman: gee, since when did they cut the connection of UCR to UCLA med school?

well I just know I have to work really hard at the low or mid-tier UC’s that accept me in order to get accepted at more prestigious med schools, including UCLA.

^Is that true? I believe the general rule for grad and law school is that the institution attended doesn’t matter, just the GPA you received (which are calibrated based on the school you attended, to some extent). Does undergraduate of the undergraduate institution really play a role in med school admissions?

I don’t know as much about Med school, but for law school, institution does seem to matter, at least at the higher tier law schools. The exact connection between admissions and UG institution is not decisively provable, however, if you look at Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, UChicago, NYU, and other very highly ranked law schools, you will notice that relatively few people are admitted and attend from public colleges; the few that come from public colleges generally come from the very best public colleges, such as UCB and UCLA. So if you are in CA and you want to go to UChicago Law, you’d better be going to UCLA or UCB (assuming you go to a public college, if private then Stanford, etc.). For these top tiers, you are competing with Ivy Leaguers with the same stats coming from much better educational backgrounds.

probably has to do with Davis being retardedly huge. It’s like 5 times the size of UCLA. It’s so big, those bastards have their own airport (and fire department iirc.)
