What's so good about a land-grant university?

hey, senior and class of 2016. I’m planning on attending Alabama A&M or UT Martin. I saw that Alabama was a land grant university. So my question really is: what’s the point in land grant university? Do they give you more financial aid or scholarship money? I’m an independent and my efc is gonna be pretty low. So if it’s a land grant university will they give me more need based aid?

The land grant universities are those that were funded by a federal law in the 1800’s that gave federal land to states to sell to raise money for colleges with more technical majors, as opposed to the liberal arts colleges that were prevalent then. They tend to be big public universities, but Cornell has a land grant portion and MIT was also a land grant college. There is no general rule about the land grant universities; you’ll have to look at each one individually for their financial aid policies.

Unless you’re a student interested in studying the agricultural sciences, there is nothing inherently superior about land grant schools.

I’m gonna be majoring in plant science

For that major, you should also look at Auburn.

Alright thanks
