What's so great about Michigan?

I've been searching for the best engineering schools in the country and I keep seeing Carnegie Mellon, MIT, Cornell, Stanford, and Michigan. I had never really heard much about Michigan but I keep coming across it. I was wondering if it is really that great, like its ranked higher than Cornell, is that true? Is it really that competitive and respected, tops in the country? Are there other programs very good? I never really thought public schools were that great except for Berkeley, maybe I'm wrong. Can someone give me some infoormation on Michigan, I'm getting pretty interested. What is the school like, how academic is it? Why should I choose Michigan over these other top schools?

Thanks guys, being a Michigan forum, I assume I'll get some positive answers!

I believe this sums it up quite nicely.

don’t forget about University of Illinios- Urbana Champaign! Their engineering is top 5. Michigan is excellent though.

Michigan’s engineering school is excellent. How high they are rated varies by major. IMHO…overall Michigan is a fantastic balance of academics and social experience.

There are only four schools in the country that can claim to have stronger engineering programs than Michigan: Cal, Cal Tech, MIT, and Stanford

Look into specialty rankings if you know the field you’re going into

Also consider regional job potential - do you planning to move back to your home state, or try to find work in the same state as the university?

Do visit and sit in classes if you can

How many of you have attended Michigan?

“What is the school like, how academic is it? Why should I choose Michigan over these other top schools?”

I imagine it’s less academic than those other schools you mentioned, but still pretty academic. This is assuming by academic you mean how much time the average person puts into their studies and such. It’s somewhat competitive, again, I imagine less competitive than the other schools you listed, but still enough to be called “competitive.”

North Campus, where the Engineering classes are, is pretty.

There’s a number of different restaurants you can walk to from Central.

I guess that’s all I can think of right now…

Everything

Michigan Enigneering is definitely Top 5!
