What's the acceptance rate for stats + CS at UIUC?

I recently admitted to Statistics and Computer Science. I have far lower stats than others who got deferred to CS. Is the acceptance rate far higher for stats + CS at UIUC compared to CS?

no way is it far higher. Slightly higher? Sure. But the department is so full, even CS kids are having trouble signing up for classes.

Depending on which calculation you want to believe (UIUC doesnt publish admissions stats by major), CS acceptance rate is somewhere between 5-30%, STAT/CS probably a little higher.

This is a great accomplishment, congrats on getting in!

Overall admission rate is definitely around 10-12% for the whole CS department and probably around 5-7% for CS Engineering. These numbers can be derived using information available in the public domain. Please refer the data for Fall 2017 at http://www.dmi.illinois.edu/stuenr/class/enrfa17.htm.

The UIUC enrollment data publicly available says in 2017 Fall UIUC enrolled 160 students in whole CS department (i.e. combining CS from CoE + all CS majors offered from LAS). In CS Eng just 69 students was enrolled. UIUC says they got more than 5000 applications for CS. Assuming only 30% of the admitted students were enrolled, the admission rate would be about 11% for whole CS department.

Reported acceptance rate last year for Computer Science in the College of Engineering at UIUC is 18.5%:

When people say things like “wow, acceptance rate is under 10%, it’s like 5%”, what they are really referring to is the enrollment rate (i.e. number of available seats divided by total applications received - e.g. 200 seats / 4000 applications = 5%). Some people have difficulty interpreting data and say things that are not correct. Not maliciously, but rather out of cluelessness.

The best source is to contact the school directly.

Best of luck!!!

I should provide here how I derived to the acceptance rates in my previous post. Mathematically the Acceptance rate is the the percentage of candidates who had been offered admission. And, any college decides to offer admissions to a set of students based on a) the total number of seats they need to fill b) the estimated percentage of students who will not to enroll to the school after receiving the offer letter. Colleges typically uses there past admission statistics for coming up with this percentage.

In my previous post, I estimated the number of candidates who had been offered admission using two other numbers: a) the number of candidates who eventually enrolled at CS COE. This number is same as the number seats the college wants to fill for the given academic year. I used the number I got from a public source http://www.dmi.illinois.edu/stuenr/class/enrfa17.htm which is from UIUC only. This number is 69 for CS COE for Fall 2017 as per this site. b) the other number is the percentage of students who chose to enroll at UIUC CS Engineering after getting the admission offer. This number is an estimate and assumption is that 30% of students eventually enrolled for CS COE.

The number of students who was offered admission then is 69/0.3 or about 210 including both EA and RD applications. In another source, I saw more than 4300 applications for CS COE was received in Fall 2017. Using a rounded number of 4400 applications, the overall acceptance rate would be 210/4400 or just 5%. Note here all numbers are coming from public sources except the percentage of students who eventually chose to enroll at UIUC. If this number is less than 30%, say 25% then the estimated acceptance rate would be 6%. That’s why the acceptance rate for CS Engineering would most likely be within the 5-7% range as I stated earlier.

I have also seen different acceptance rates at different posts, but none them backs up the numbers citing public sources and also what assumptions they have made for coming up with their estimates unlike what I have mentioned here.

No offense @billin, but you just cited some random Q&A post answered by someone with no affiliation with the university other than that they went there a long time ago, and no actual source mentioned whatsoever. So it doesn’t make sense that you are passive aggressively telling other people how to interpret data.

@R34Dream
There is a current UIUC red dit thread where a UIUC professor posting there agrees that 2017 acceptance rate for UICU Computer Science in COE (Engineering only) was around 18% and is expected to be around 15% in 2018 (see below). CS + Stats would probably be higher but have not seen any data on CS+x.

I don’t believe red dit links are allowed here, but you can go to the UIUC red dit page and search for a post titled “Chance me for UIUC CS” dated today. The acceptance stats comment states:

"That sounds about right. Rough estimates for Fall 2018:

4900 applications to CS Engineering
800 admission offers (~15% of applications)
200 new freshmen (~4% of applications)"

FYI, the ‘that sounds about right’ refers to a poster stating the 2017 rate was around 18%.

If you have a better source than a current professor, please post.

You and galaxy should get together and form a data science consulting firm. I think it would do great! Mad math & analysis skillz. Thanks, and best of luck!!!
