What's the atmosphere and workload like? (International Student)

I'm spending a year out of my degree here in the UK, from 2011-2012, at a US college.
(Studying literature)

I'm deciding where to go, and currently Georgetown and UNC look good.

What's the atmosphere like at Georgetown? Are people mostly friendly? Are the lecturers approachable? What are the campuses like? What's Washington D.C like?
Also, is the workload extremely heavy?

Finally, are there many internationals? Are they mostly integrated among local students, or is there a bit of a division?
I'll be there on my own (if I get the place) so I'm hoping to make some American friends. :)

I’ll dump my academic history here for viewing, but I think it is mostly about beating my fellow students here at university in my 1st and 2nd year grades. Depending on how many of us, out of 60, want one of the Georgetown places, will influence my chances.
GCSEs: A*AABBBBBB
A levels: ABB
Class ranking: Does not exist in the UK.
Other: I achieved 85% in my Literature A level, and a $1600 scholarship from my university for the year abroad programme, based on my A level grades.

I’m putting this here because I fear I may be intellectually overshadowed by most people there, and I don’t want to spend my time there in the corner wearing a dunce cap.
