Hi, I was just wondering what made people choose UNC-CH over other colleges... what attracted you to it?'
Thanks!

For me, it was an interesting choice. I got in OOS, but with no money other than National Merit. Financially speaking, this may have been a bad decision because I could have made a few thousand dollars a year going to my state school, or gone somewhere else, Vandy or USC, for less money.

That being said, Carolina could offer me something that no other school could offer me, a combination of everything you could want from a college in one wonderful tar-heel blue package. I wanted to be challenged academically, having never been challenged back in high school. That changed in a hurry after coming here and taking physics 116 (Just as a side note, I would highly not recommend taking 116 without taking some form of physics beforehand). At the same time, the social life here is something that would be hard pressed to find at any other school. Yes, there are parties if you are into that kind of thing, but there are many other opportunities for people like me who don’t party. There are so many events and speakers. I just found out that John Kerry is coming to speak here this Friday, and last semester I heard Maya Angelou speak.

Maybe the thing that clinched it for me was Carolina’s size. It really is perfect, a college set up with a town built around it. It is large enough to give you the opportunities to pursue whatever interests you may have, but small enough that you run into your friends around every corner. And the sports here are amazing, both varsity and pick-up games.

Honestly, there wasn’t a single deciding factor. As corny as it sounds, sometimes you fall in love with a college after setting foot on the campus, and that is what happened with me at Carolina.

I probably wasn’t very specific with this answer, but I’ll blame it on being tired after a late night game of frisbee. Maybe I’ll think of a better answer later.

Thanks. UNC sounds pretty neat from your enthusiastic description.

Btw, your answer was a lot more specific than I was expecting. :)

If you get a reply from cloying, phonyreal, heathergee, or uncgal, I’m sure they can give you a much better one.

Why I love being a Tar Heel:

-March Madness (!!)
-the sky is the same color as my t-shirt on game day (God must love the Tarheels)
-receiving “DANNY GREEN/TYLER HANSBROUGH/TY LAWSON SIGHTING” text messages on a semi-daily basis
-being surrounded by people who are probably as type A as I am, but still love to relax and go out when their work is done
-the public outcry in the Union when someone tries to switch the news from CNN to FOX
-running into someone I know wherever I walk on campus (especially the Pit!)
-listening to pit preachers
-feeling compelled to fiercely defend my school at the slightest criticism because I’m so proud to attend my University
-still being best friends with people I met at orientation and my suitemates from Ehringhaus last year
-Franklin Street
-being amazed at the accomplishments and passions of my peers
-being able to easily get involved with absolutely anything I’m interested in (for me, that’s women’s issues)
-riding the P2P on a friday night
-rushing Franklin after a big victory (whether it’s men’s basketball or Obama’s win!)
-obsessively completing the Daily Tar Heel crossword (yes, in class!)
-finally feeling challenged academically
-dancing to the drumline’s familiar cadence on the march down to Kenan Stadium for a football game
-socializing in the UL (Undergraduate Library); actually studying in Davis
-stumbling home from a great party with great friends (and then getting made-to-order omelettes for breakfast at Ram’s Head the next morning)
-going to YoPo
-Halloween on Franklin!!!
-hanging out at Weaver Street Market on a Sunday morning listening to bluegrass music
-going to shows at Cat’s Cradle & independent films at the Varsity (and free movies every weekend in the Union!)
-Dance Marathon
-knowing that everyone else I know loves Carolina as much as I do

Wow; I could go on and on.

We can talk trash about Duke!

Whoot Whoot!

Not being a blue devil.

(More later)

I don’t go there, but I must say…there’s something about that blueeee!!!

Hahaha I swear people at UCLA end up rooting for UNC on multiple occasions solely for that reason.
