What's the best university to study in......

UNSW's location is Sydney..and is best in Australia for engineering..

each of the following countries:

UK
Australia
Singapore
Malaysia

because I am planning on becoming a doctor and since the canadian and american system is harder and longer Which university in the countries above have the best medical education?

thx for any replies

Ok I live in sydney so I think I have a good idea of whats going on in Australia. If you can get into undergrad med here, its probably going to save you the most time. If i remember right you can actually get your MBBS (bachelor of medicine and surgery) in 3-4 years. Which is very good.

Contrary to what people think ANU is actually not that good. The only reason why it appears high on rankings and why it is so 'prestigious' is because it is a mainly postgrad research university. Compare this to other universities like sydney and melbourne which are primarily undergrad universities. I'm not even sure if ANU has medicine.

If you want to do medicine. It really depends whether you are doing it as undergrad or postgrad.

The best uni's to do Medicine are in order:

Sydney (very limited undergrad, mostly post)
Melbourne (unsure)
UNSW (good for undergrad)
Adelaide (same)
University of Newcastle (undergrad)
University of Western Sydney (really dodgy, but if u want to do med..its ok)

If you want to do med postgrad you have to sit the GAMSAT and if you want to do undergrad you have to sit the UMAT. Both are pretty hard and if you're unprepared you will most likely not make it into medicine. I think it will be harder considering you are an overseas app.

I'm not sure if you can do undergrad med at Sydney. There are limited spots for 10 of the best high school students in the state. This said i don't think there are spots for overseas. At melbourne, Im not sure how exactly it works. For UNSW its undergrad med which is good, it also seems not too hard to get into ( probably your best bet ). I heard adelaide is pretty good too, albeit a ****ty location. University of Newcastle is also decent (3 hours north of sydney). University of Western Sydney will be you rlast choice, you'll probably want to exhaust all your options before going to such a low end uni.

Remember this, medicine is one of the most competitive degrees in Australia. You have to not only have good school results to get in, but you also need to sit the UMAT/GAMSAT and get a good score. If you have both, you will attend an interview, where you'll be interviewed by a series of interviewees in booths. Its highly competitive for homegrown students and for overseas applicants, I'd imagine it'd be even harder.

Umm... ANU's location does NOT suck. It's like saying Washington DC absolutely sucks. No, it doesn't. Canberra is the political centre, but it also boasts a rich music and arts culture as well as being very close to Sydney and Melbourne.

Don't talk crap, Paki.

Of course ANU has a medical school, and an excellent one at that.

As for location -- get over it. New Haven is a sh**hole, but I doubt many rational people would attend UCLA instead of Yale simply because of the city.

I think many people would attend yale over UCLA because it is not in LA!!

Thanks for the replies I have another question

Can I study medicine in Canada?how is it?is it the same as the US system?

do I have to take a gap year to study in australia?
because I am graduating in june 2008

Kha7577, in Australia, u can get admission in 2 different semesters...i.e., as far as I have knowledge, most of the Australian unis take admissions for 2 semesters,i.e., for 1st semester, the dates for application forms are generally from October and the start of term is generally in the end of February...for 2nd Semester, the dates for appliacation forms are from April and the start of term is in July...
(Better check out the sites...and do not forget to contact the admission office and explain ur situation..)...

@ vesalvay : are you from canberra?. yea you need to get over it already. why i said anu's location sucks is because say in comparison melb has a much larger student population, so adds alot more to the environment there. its like boston is a very good student city with the environment.

yale vs UCLA is a much wider gap than say ANU vs unimelb or UNSW. so i guess location would play a part in the latter case.

@ kha7577 : as said above, july session would be suitable for you if you get your results( duno if they give conditional offers) by then and you have your results. you need to apply quite early for the visa too.

I need to get over it already? What does that even mean???

It's what you make of it, pal. If you think that "ANU's location sucks" and that is enough rationale to say that UniMelb is necessarily better, then you have a seriously warped sense of universities in Australia.

im not saying that the location factor is enough to choose unimelb over anu for every one , ofcourse subject wise one may prefer anu because of individual rankings , but for some this may not be that important

and if you take other things into consideration too, anu is no holy harvard either, add to that the news that its a more of a grad institution, you have enough reason to choose unimelb over it.

oh yea if by warped you mean better than most, then thanks for the compliment :p. * rude guy/gal*

btw canberra is a very quiet place, stop pretending otherwise

Did you even make a decent point just then?

Mate, do whatever you want and say whatever you want. But going around telling people that "ANU's location sucks" is plain immature and stupid.

There are so many better resources in Canberra than elsewhere. And although Canberra is "quiet" in comparison to Melbourne, there is no doubt that is because the way the city has been designed and probably the fact that you were cooped up in your room Thursday, Friday, Saturday nights and when you did go out, you thought that Mooseheads Happy Hour was the epitome of cool in Canberra.

it was a general statement from me and the truth is that even if you start counting all those small number of pros that you do have for canberra, it isnt the best location compared to other places. ( saying out loud that it sucks is clearly offensive to you)

im not saying that its a ****ty university with crappy facilities, canberra just isnt the best of towns. if some one has a choice to study in a uni in canberra or elsewhere, he can make a better one.

personal attacks wont get you anywhere, you're better off giving us examples of its 'better' resources rather than just saying that sydney and melb are an hour away.

Canberra isn't the best of towns? Is this really a serious comment? If so, explain exactly why...

Is that why people flock to ANU from all over the country and indeed overseas too? Think about it, dude.

Where are its better resources? Kidding me? Everything national, monumental, from libraries, to galleries, they all are in Canberra. You want to see how Australian politics works first-hand? Just go to Parliament House. You want to see what it is like at the different levels of legal courts? Go to magistrates, supreme and the high court. Need to find information some esoteric subject? Go to the National Library. Want to carry out major research, either go to ANU or work with the CSIRO where they are making groundbreaking discoveries. Want to study piano at the most successful Australian piano conservatory? Go to the School of Music.

I could go on and on.

I think I've made it patently clear, mate.

I've got nothing against all those things you said :$

but from an international student's perspective, im not interested in the political and government scene.

im going to a college, what im looking for is , whats the mode of public transport. how multicultural is it , to maximise my experience. how good are public spots there.

canberra's population is roughly equal to the *student * population in melb. agreed one finds entertainment experiences every where, but with such a small number in canberra, do you expect alot of variety?- i dont think so.Is there a beach in canberra?, no there isnt.

all the things you said , they may sound good to the avg nerd, but what abt someone who wants more of a living experience than one just limited to education.

Wow, Melbourne's student population is nearing half a million?

Not all international students are uninterested by politics, government oh and you forgot to mention music, arts, law, scientific research etc (oops!)

Multicultural? Are you kidding me? The Australian annual multicultural festival is held for a week here and it's huge. It is VERY multicultural. Doesn't have a beach, no. You can hardly call Melbourne's beach, a beach. Public transport, I agree it isn't the best. That's it really. Transport. Big whoop.

The thing you fail to realize is that all those things I pointed out to you, they DO appeal to living experience. You get to come into contact with the things you are passionate about or maybe you decide to go beyond your field and explore. Living experience does not equate to good transport and getting trashed every night.

Canberra has plenty of good hotspots and clubs, for your information.

I'm out of things to argue about.

why arent you going to anu?

An indirect form of admitting defeat. I can settle with that.

I'm not going to ANU, because I've been given a place at Columbia :)

Which also brings me to the question:
Where did you go for undergraduate and/or graduate?

I'm out of things to argue about solely because i've never been to canberra, and all my posts are the views of students on forums and some who i know personally , so pardon me if i'm getting on some nerves here.

on second thought, i looked up on wikipedia and the population of canberra is arnd 300k, and yes that is abt the same as the student population of melbourne.

you must really like columbia, NYC ( no surprises there) to choose it over a place you have so much love for. me?, I'll hopefully be joining University College London this fall

Well, ANU's population is around 35,000.......(they claim, it's a small village in itself!)....
As for the city (Canberra), All I have heard is......it SUCKS as compared to Sydney!...:p..
And to be more specific, ANU's location is the one that sucks!..
