whats the best way to get to berkeley?

If i'm coming in at LAX or SF airport, whats the easiest way to get to campus. Keep in mind ill have all my luggage cause ill be moving in right then.

LAX? Thats nowhere near Berkeley... I would fly into Oakland.

Going from LAX to Berkeley is a 6 hour drive. Not a good idea. Oakland isn't bad, but can you catch BART from there?

I heard there's a bus that go from Oakland airport to BART station, then you just take BART to berkeley I think.

Yeah, in that case, go to Oakland.

I hate to sound like the Californian, but don't people in the rest of the country realize that landing in LAX to get to Berkeley is like landing at Dulles to get to Columbia University?

Yeah, Oakland (OAK) Airport is closest, then San Francisco (SFO). Both airports should offer some kind of shuttle service to Berkeley. Don't even consider a taxi...it's way too expensive.

BTW, where are you coming from?

Did you check the UCB website. There is a ton of information for new students! <a href="http://resource.berkeley.edu/%5B/url%5D">http://resource.berkeley.edu/</a></p>

Taking BART isn't practical for you, because you're bringing luggage.

To and from airports
<a href="http://resource.berkeley.edu/r_html/r03_09.html#airports%5B/url%5D">http://resource.berkeley.edu/r_html/r03_09.html#airports</a></p>

The easiest way to get to or from the Oakland (OAK) and San Francisco (SFO) airports is to take a shuttle van, which is like a taxi, but much less expensive with fares running from $19 (ask if there's a student discount). When taking a shuttle, be sure to call the company well ahead of time to make a reservation and to confirm departure times.

BayPorter Express shuttles pick you up at your doorstep and run to both airports (<a href="http://www.bayporter.com;%5B/url%5D">www.bayporter.com;</a> $21 one-way; 877/467-1800).

City Express Shuttle serves Oakland and San Francisco and offers student discounts (638-8830).

Luxor services the Oakland airport ($19 one-way, 7am-10pm, 562-7222).

BART to airports
BART and transferring to a local bus is the least expensive option to and from airports, and it's easy if you don't have a lot of luggage.

Oakland Airport by BART: catch the Richmond-Fremont line in the Fremont direction and get off at the Coliseum stop. Then, take an Air-BART shuttle, which goes directly to the Oakland Airport and leaves every 15 minutes and costs $2. Buy your ticket in the station before boarding the bus (runs M-Sa, 6am-11:50pm; Su, 8am-11:45pm; BART, 465-2278).

You can also use your Class Pass and take AC Transit bus #50 (6am-midnight) or bus N (midnight-6am) from the Coliseum BART to the airport (runs daily, every 20-30 minutes 6am-midnight and hourly midnight-6am).

SFO by BART: catch the Richmond-Fremont line in the Fremont direction then transfer at MacArthur stop to a Millbrae train and get off at the San Francisco International Airport stop ($5.50 one-way).

gsp,

Good point on the shuttle service. I'm blushing because I overlooked an option I take almost every time I travel. Oh well, we're all imperfect. :p

I'm international, coming from Pakistan. I'd have to go through LAX . I know LA is a bit far, but i might be making a pit stop there. I'd probably have to take another flight to get to oakland. And i guess i can't use BART, cuz i have luggage. A shuttle maybe?

I guess if you have to fly into LAX, you definitely need to catch another flight to Oakland. Ideally you would just fly into San Francisco or Oakland. From there I would use a shuttle to get to Berkeley. When I was in New York I used SuperShuttle and they were really good and only $19. Im not sure if they have that for Oakland, but its worth a try.

True. Taking the BART is the best option because the traffic is atrocious. Fly to San Francisco OR Oakland.

I actually think it's easier to fly to SF because the BART goes right through the airport. The price is about $7.00 to go to Berkeley.

Board the Richmind Train and get off at Downtown Berkeley. I've commuted to Berkeley from another station around 500 times already.

SFO still lands international flights so i dont think youd be required to land at LAX first, and SFO is probably the easiest simply because BART runs directly into the terminal, and two blocks from campus. As far as luggage goes, BART is probably just as easy (or difficult) to take with luggage as any other option short of your own limo.

UCLAri: yeah it is kinda funny when people do that, but i think its cause people dont realize how long CA actualy is top to bottom. They know its most of the west coast but they dont realize it takes 12 hours minimum to drive top to bottom.
