What do people at UA do during the weekends? Do they go “home” or do they stay on campus? Are there weekend classes?

No weekend classes. You can relax, catch up on some television, hang out with friends that you don’t get to see much during the school week, maybe go see a movie, get a group of friends together and hit the town (or Birmingham)…the possibilities are endless.

You’re a adult now, so you have a lot more freedoms, except for the freedoms that require you to be 21 ;).

Obviously you would be in the library studying. ;)

On football weekends in the fall, NOBODY goes home…in fact, you welcome an additional 90,000 for the game!
On non-football weekends, LOTS of people go home.
But there are a LOT of people still left, so it’s not like everything is dead. OTOH, compared to football weekends, it will seem like it’s dead!

is it mainly the upperclassmen who go home, or does that apply to the freshmen as well?

Where do the students that stay on campus on football weekends park their cars? I feel sure they have to move them off campus.

Some freshmen do leave on weekends if they live nearby or have an event off-campus. During football games, most students don’t have to move their cars unless they park in a lot close to the stadium. AFAIK, those in the Ridgecrest, Riverside, and Lakeside lots/garage don’t have to move their cars.

I agree with feeno that there are many different things you might do on a weekend. Some students will go home, others will stay and do things on and around campus. Generally, Friday afternoon will feel more like the weekend while Sunday afternoon feels like a weekday since people are getting back to campus and studying. FWIW, the main entree during Sunday’s lunch at Lakeside Dining is fried chicken and all stations are open, while Friday dinner and all day Saturday are on a limited menu. Additionally, there is often a movie being shown in the Ferg Theater on Sunday evenings.

As at many schools, students will sleep in on weekends, so weekend mornings will be quieter than the nights and evenings. Note that for home football weekends, the campus will be very busy all of Saturday.

why is it busier on sat afternoon and not sunday afternoon?

UA football games are usually on Saturdays. On non-home game weekends and during the offseason, Sunday afternoons are arguably busier than Saturday afternoons since people are coming back to campus on Sundays, but when you have 90,000 extra people in town for a football game, those Saturdays can be busier than any weekday.

When you’re talking about how busy it is on campus, you have to include how busy it is on The Strip. Many kids are hanging out there on weekends.

On non-game weekends, a lot of the students who live “close” to Ttown go home. Some people who live further away (3-4 hrs) don’t go home every weekend, maybe like once a month. But on game days, the campus buzzes with activity. The quad is filled with tents and tailgaters, and McFarland is bumper-to-bumper before and after the game.

I agree with SEA_tide that Friday and Saturday are generally more what you would think of as the weekend, while Sunday acts as more of a wind down day, prepping for the next week with studying and all that.

We live 2 1/2 hours away from campus. There’s no way that my boys would come home very often. They’re not about to give up 5 hours on a weekend driving…LOL. They are busy on weekends with school-related activities…academic and social.

It’s just a matter of personal preference, of course.

i remember this one person on CC who said she commuted 90 miles between her home and her university EVERY DAY! :O

Yikes!!!

I have heard of such situations on CC, too. Some of those students try to take all their classes on M, W, F, so they don’t have to drive in everyday.

Obviously, that is not a desirable situation! No life!

what’s more was that she went to the university of minnesota…so you can imagine what the winters were like

i wish i could find that thread…i think it was in the cafe or something
