I've read that if you pursue a pre-med schedule along with your major, JHU "weeds out" potential med school applicants, allowing only those they deem possibly successful to apply. How do they do this, how does it work and has anyone here ever had to deal with this?
Thanks.

Whats the DEAL with jhu premed. whoops

I am hearing the exact same thing that coolguyusa is saying...

I heard that the way they do it is by refusing to write you reccomendations or by mailing in your papers late...

I heard that they do this to maintian the school's high rating for % of students who get into med-school...if they can stop you from applying then they don't have to count you for this statistic...

Its pretty lame if you ask me...I was going to apply to JHU ED, but after hearing all of this I am having second thoughts...

I have also heard that there is so much competition among JHU pre-med students that it is pathetic. For example I heard that kids will check out all the books from the library on a specific topic so that no one else can read them and do well on exams...if you ask me, this is taking competition too far...I don't really want to be in an environment where everyone wants to see you fail...

whats with all of these rumours? Obviously y'all are talking to the wrong people. "mailing your papers in late?" what? could you imagine if they really did that? 'cmon now.

UM, JHU does absolutely refuse to give the "pink stamp approval certificates" to pre-med who they are not confident will make it. Therefore, they have above a 95 percent acceptance rate.

"Not Confident?"......does this mean sub 3.2 gpa and low MCAT?? I doubt Hopkins is the ONLY school that discourages a premed from applying with less than mediocre stats.

Believe me.. as someone that knows hopkins very very well that you'll love it!

alrite, as a pre-med, i would be very discouaged and afraid to go to a place that not only weeds kids out like none other but will not let them apply if their #s are bad. I mean that's insane.

Any other opinions??

All the rumors I've heard about Hopkins weeding students out have been through word of mouth. When things are spread online in gossip form, its quite possible for things to get overblow, especially since Hopkins has the reputation for being so competitive. I've heard students from JHU say that the competitiveness doesn't show by people checking out all the books, but rather by studying really hard, thus influencing the curve. As for the weeding out of pre-meds, I'm not sure its any worse than any other prestigious school. Unless any of you have any sources from people who know first hand, I think its all pretty suspect.

All:

I think this is what you have been asking to see:

A bunch of us, including myself, collegiate, afan, and SamLee have been discussing this subject here:
