what's the deal about double majoring and what are the benefits?

I want to be a lawyer, so how would double majoring work for me? would i major in political science and something else?

thanks!!

Doesn’t matter what you major in if you’re applying to law school–only no-nos are pre-professional or trade majors.

The “deal” with double majoring is that many schools have distribution requirements or a core curriculum, which are obnoxious to get out of the way. These reqs make it even more difficult to get breadth and depth within both majors–personally problematic if you’re intellectually curious, but law schools won’t care if you lack them.

if you want to be a patent attorney you need to have a degree in a science or engineering field. So in that case a double-major might make sense for you if you also want to take the poli-sci classes to get the writing exposure.

If your completely set on being a lawyer and political science only catches your interest then double majoring could be less favorable for you. I myself plan to double major in political science and economics. I do have interest in being a lawyer, though I also have interest in other related fields and favor learing economics and political science in general.
