What's the deal with being waitlisted?

Can you accept a spot on the waitlist for more than one school? Are you allowed to still accept an offer of admission from another school if you accept a waitlist spot from a different school?

Just a little unclear on how that whole thing works...

Yes, you can accept multiple waitlists (because you don’t know which one will clear).

Yes, you can accept an admissions offer AND a place on another school’s waitlist, and you should–otherwise you may be left with nowhere to go in the fall.

Okay, thanks! So is there any benefit to turning DOWN a waitlist offer?

^^ Yes, the satisfaction that you didn’t get a rejection notice.

The advantage to turning down a waitlist is that you can emotionally move on and start focusing on the school that you will most likely attend in the fall. Very few folks make it off of waitlists so putting your self on one just keeps the uncertainty going for several months with the likelihood of ending in disappointment.
