For Hunter College, admission rates look pretty competitive, (approx. 30%) and their SAT scores range from 1710-1830. It's also extremely cheap for out-of-state students ($10,000).

I'm just curious how reputable CUNY schools are and why they are so cheap. There's gotta be a catch! There are a whole bunch and Hunter seems to be the best so I'm using that as my example. Do CUNY undergrads have a chance at a really good grad school (ie Ivies)? I'm from PA and I've never heard of Hunter College/CUNY schools.

CUNY was free until 1976. It is still a bargain, cheaper than SUNY which is also relatively cheap for out-of-state students.

Although NYC is an expensive place to live, it is certainly possible to live (and dine) within reasonable commuting distance of all SUNY campuses for a lot less than $25-30k/year!

Several of the campuses (Hunter, Baruch, Queens, Brooklyn) have excellent programs.

Hunter College is an excellent school- especially the School of Health Sciences ( nursing, PT, speech etc). Many years ago when I got my MA from Hunter, the program was so difficult that students were leaving and going to Columbia- and getting in. It was easier to get into Columbia than Hunter ( for my particular degree). In my opinion Hunter College is one of the best kept secrets in NYC.

In real life the CUNYs are all pretty good, especially for the cost. But in my mind they’re home to dropouts (unless the students are in Macaulay).
