ok so whats the deal. are they looking for a "diversified body of students with rich academic and social talents/abilities" or are they looking for rich kids that can foot the 50K/year bill??

i'm just wondering. because a close friend, who is pretty wealthy, but not exactly up to par with the academics of GW just got rejected from UMass and got into GW ED II

yeah---i'm sure GW would take into account alot of things a huge state school like UMAss wouldn't, such as legacy, leadership, service, a really impressive essay, shown interest, etc.---the two aren't a great comparison

Rich kids who pay the tuition/legacies essentially end up providing opportunities for poor kids to attend. Without their tuition money, it'd be hard for the university to maintain its financial aid, nice facilities, professors, etc.

And in turn, the admissions office is able to admit people they really want regardless of financial need.

Rejected from UMass and accepted at GWU! That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. To get rejected from UMass you basically have to have failed multiple classes and have an SAT below 1000. Something is definately fishy with that situation.

A lot of people were definitely below state-school material when I was there. However, there were just as many brilliant kids... Some of my best friends are now at Stanford Med School, Cornell Law, etc.

i was accepted into gw last december as an early decision candidate. when my financial aid package came, it included only a $2625 stafford loan. when i called and asked them about it, they responded that my family reported we could afford $52,000 in tuition costs - that is over 70% of our income! my dad was unemployed for the first time in 17 years last year and my mother is a full-time teacher and a phd candidate at st. louis university. i, myself, work two part-time jobs (one 20hours per week at a grocery store and another a couple of days at the national parks service) not to mention being a full-time high school student.

so, to answer your question, yes gw wants rich kids, but all colleges do. i just dont think gw is worth it.

oh, did i mention im white and im from the midwest? that never helps...

so are you saying that kids with below average stats that are rich and need no aid have a better chance of acceptance at GW? Do the majority of kids that go there get aid or not? that sucks for me, if so.

Tstuddud -- me too! I'm from a typical middle class family and my dad is currently out on disability, and I barely got any money as an ED acceptee. My parents are actually going down to DC in two weeks to discuss their appeal with someone from the financial aid office, so we have our fingers crossed.

I can't imagine someone getting in RD with this kind of financial aid package and actually going. If I knew this was how much money I'd get, I would never have applied ED. I really want to go to GW, but it's so so not worth this much money.

ggwu2010: good luck with your appeal, i hope yours went better than mine did. i contacted my local congressman (with whom i am close friends with) and he made a personal visit to the college and the financial aid director - got nothing.

now im not saying that its not possible, because i know many people who got in excess of 20k from gw in aid, but it didnt happen to me.

tstuddud, i'm sorry that you didn't get as much financial aid as you wished for... but GW isn't that ungenerous in giving financial aid as you so claim ("if you arent rich forget it"). my family is far from being wealthy too, but we were offered a pretty good financial aid package overall.

kellyconn1, GW likes students with good SAT scores, strong extracurricular activities, and excellent high school credentials... not kids with below average stats who are rich and need no aid whatsoever. you find those kids at American University.

sorry, haha, i'm so mean to American University students.. but i just saw their forum, and some people actually believe AU to be on the same level as GWU. gahh, sure.

Well, trying to save GW's now even more so tarnished image of bratty students thanks to brilliantmusings (don't worry it happens, i still love you and that is what matters). GW is a very very very pricey university because tuition is fixed so instead of raising tuition each year they merely build in a ceiling. One university who really took advantage of their tuition increases this year was Drexel who upped their tuition 18 percent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That can just be as damaging as GW, but at least with GW your tuition will NOT go up and you have time to create a real plan for paying for GW. Once you have been given an award from GW for financial aid, you can only gain money if you reapply next year it will never go down (GW Grants and Merit money at least, federal dollars is at the discretion of the President and Congress). All I can say is begin looking at external scholarships and stay in touch with GW Financial Aid, they truly want to help, but with a class of what should be about 2,350 and a smaller endowment of about 750 million there is only so much GW can give, but if they can they will. I hope to see you at GW in the fall!

percent of admitted students applying for need based aid at gwu: 61% (oh and remember its $7,000 more a year)
Percent of students applying for need based aid at American: 74%

Test score ranges (from secondary sources of course...GWU's stats obviously don't include yield- and are therefore inflated):
American: 1180-1360 SAT OR 26-30 ACT
GWU: 1200-1390SAT OR 26-31

i think everyone just needs to face the fact that GWU is ranked higher ONLY b/c of its selectivity (which is a result of better brand recongnition of course(more applicants)--mainly b/c of the reputation of its GRADUATE programs which throws the G-dub name out in to academia quite often(peer ranking))---don't dispute that American is much less well known

heehee.....yeap they also try to copy the story that they are THE university that george washington wanted founded in the city as a national university for the entire nation's youths blah blah blah....if there would be such an idealistic/public serving school wouldn't it be public????? i guess it truly is UDc then-hehe no really it is GW-----oh hell you gotta love academia's pretensiousness
