Okay, do you guys seriously believe by attacking each other that you're going to convince the other person to change their beliefs?

Of course. Eventually they will all come around to my point of view ;).

It's a damn shame more people haven't heard of Barry Goldwater. He was one of the best politicians of the 20th century.

I really liked Zell Miller because he has been a lifelong Democrat and yet he sees what the other Dems don't.

I'm not sure what you are referring to when you write about "what made America what it is today," but John Adams, George Washington, Ben Franklin, and the rest of the Continental Congress of 1776 would be mortified to see how George Bush et al. just threw away the cornerstone of constitutional rights that these great men risked their lives to protect.

George Washington in his parting speech warned the country that in order to survive it had to resist from intervening in other country's affairs.

The present Administration has taken a dramatic u-turn from the democracy that America has been evolving into since 1776. They are also heading us headlong into nuclear war, in case you haven't noticed. But you probably haven't lived long enough to understand how, in a much less hawkish and more competent administration, we were one-Russian-submarine-commander away from nuclear extinction in 1962. Most historians agree that this is the most dangerous time in world history, thanks to the Bush Administration who thinks that dominating the rest of world will make it a safer place. On the contrary, hegemony leads to enemies who will match our violence measure for measure and then some. Never mind protecting unborn children, Fides, just wait until they blow away Boston, NY, and ...where do you live? Oh, Toronto, (it'll go when they hit Boston).

To answer your erroneous observation that "all liberals are young people," first, they are not. I'm 57 and most of the liberal books are written by people over 50. Perhaps you are talking about young people who have recently emerged in the prior few years from universities. It's true that most universities are liberal, especially the most learned universities in the world. That's because learned people think less from gut prejudices and convenient self-serving thinking and more from knowledge of how the world really works. Perhaps conservatives ought to ask themselves why learned people are liberal? P.S. I never understood how Christians could rationalize going to war, especially a war that has nothing to do with defense, but exploitation and greed.

to tell you the truth, I'm thinking about leaving CC. I'm so tired of reading threads that bash Bush and conservatives ad nauseam. This was a good forum for high school and post secondary education, but now it's becoming a soapbox for Bush bashers. Now, I don't mind if you are a liberal or if you don't like Bush, but this forum is getting way too political.

"Fides-- you are an ignorant loser."

You're a bum head. Na-na-na-boo-boo.

Now, what did that accomplish?

fides is a troll =X

Yeah, guys, let's all play Discredit the Conservative! It's glorious fun.

smurfette,

Wait...and you don't think there's enough of the poo flinging at the Dems going on?

Fides,

I for one consider myself a "liberal." But I don't see how wanting libertarian government and fairly intelligent economic policy based on smart economics is "trying to tear down everything."

well this thread was going against the libs, but who hijacked this thread?

Well said, Mothermay!

'...What's the deal with those evil, filthy liberals?'

My, my, how judgmental you are. I'm sure Jesus would approve of you!

'...Why are they so intent on tearing down everything that made America what it is?...'

Um, the freedom of religion, the freedom of speech, the right to dissent...these are 'liberal' values. So how is it that liberals are 'tearing down' what made America what it is? Explain, please. Thanks.

'...Why are they such overly-idealistic, religion-hating moral relativists?...'

What's wrong with being idealistic? Aren't we supposed to be following Jesus' example? Well, wouldn't you say that he was very idealistic? Can't get any more idealistic than 'love your neighbor' and 'turn the other cheek' and 'sell all that you have and follow me' and 'easier for a camel to go thru the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven' and 'give to the poor' and....oh, and one of my favs: 'on the outside all whitewashed but inside like dead man's bones' referring to the religious leaders of his time (the hypocrites who were more concerned with power than with love) - yeah, I'd say Jesus was pretty down on dogma... and VERY idealistic!

So I guess you could say liberals are the way they are because they are trying to follow Jesus' example.

'...Why are they such defeatists, especially when it comes to wars of any kind?'

No, not defeatist. Idealistic. See, we want God to bless EVERYONE, as in, share His love with them - not just the 'elite' few who are 'christian.'

As for being against war: simple. See above bible paraphrases. Jesus said to turn the other cheek. War is the exact opposite of what Jesus preached.

'...Why do they pretend to love freedom when they favor vast, monolithic bureaucracies for governments?'

Do the math. GWB has pulled the wool over your eyes. We now have an extremely vast, beauracratic govt. thanks to him. And we're losing the very liberties that defined our country.

'...Why do they think that all ideas regarding how men should live that are older than them are irrelevant?'

Actually, many liberals read ancient 'holy books' that predate the bible. The bible is but one ancient text. Not the only one. Lots of wisdom to be found in old books. Just don't make it a dogma and force it on others.

'...Why are they usually young people with no more than a couple of years of post-secondary liberal arts education?...'

Now that is quite a generalization. Not very intelligent at all. Do you have statistics to back that up?

OK, Fidas. I answered you point by point. Friendly debate, no disrespect. I would like to invite you to answer me point by point and avoid generalizations. I'm also still waiting for a response on the other thread about Levitical law. I really do want to know just how you decide which of those laws to enforce and which to let slide. How do you decide when to stone people for minor transgressions, for example?

check this out:

Where the Right Went Wrong: How Neoconservatives Subverted the Reagan Revolution and Hijacked the Bush Presidency by Patrick J. Buchanan

I'm mostly liberal (but pro-life) and I think Pat Buchanan ROCKS! Because he is a TRUE conservative and he exposes the truth about the neocons (bush et al) who are posing as conservatives but are anything but.

I think that the OP has been reading a lot of Ann Coulter.

"...I have read EVERY SINGLE Bush bashing/conservative bashing thread on this site and those posts are very sporting. Everytime someone claims they're a Bush supporter, swarms of people gang up on that supporter...."

I can really sympathize with your experience. The exact same thing happens to me. Except, it is the opposite - I am the one who gets ganged up on. Virtually everyone at work is conservative and they take great delight in teasing me, bashing my views, laughing at me, and ganging up on me. They are really rude and disrespectful and closed-minded. I don't even try to persuade them of anything - just being the way I am opens me up to their ridicule.

So, it can work either way. It just depends on whether you're the minority in your area.

Everybody hates the classical liberal. Oh well.

"...Everybody hates the classical liberal. Oh well...."

Why?
