whats the deal with 'personal expenses'?!

Georgetown says that included in its 'cost of attendance' is $2500 in "books and personal expenses". i dont really get this. doesnt this mean that somebody who will not have much at all personal expenses will pay 1-2k extra in cost? suppose somebody got a full ride, does this mean that they will receive books for free automatically? does anybody know how these personal expenses work with/affect financial aid.

Its not included in your bill. Its the money your parents would give you to cover those costs. As far as financial aid, they usually try to cover those costs with Work study...i don't think anyone really gets a full ride...but its not included in your final bill, but they do have you keep it in mind when attending georgetown. The costs also definitely vary dependending on the classes you take and what your lifestyle is like.

Okay, I may be wrong, but I am guessing its just misc. living expenses....shampoo, toothpaste, "personal products", aspirin, subway rides, the guesstimate of expenses beyond food and room....it is an estimate of additional stuff....I could be wrong, but that was my sense...

it's not included in what you pay.

Yeah I was tryin to find out about that too, if it's not included in what you pay, does that mean it's not included in the cost of attendance?

it basically means pocket money. you don't pay it to the University. It's the estimated amount of money that you'll need for books, fun, etc.

so the school never gives you money for that, even financial aid? All the financial aid and scholarships cover are the tuition and board? Hey, and thanx for tryin to help. Do you go to Georgetown right now? What year are you?

no problem. Financial aid only covers tuition and board. The personal expenses money isn't included on your bill, b/c you can't say how much a person would spend on food, clothes, books, etc. It's your own pocket money.

I'm a freshman at Georgetown right now.

they give you financial aid for personal expenses, b/c its included in the cost of attendance. the EFC that they come up with includes personal expenses. it appears though that the bill they actually send you only includes tuition, R&B, and requird fees

Yeah, I thought it was included when they try to figure out how much you should have to pay for financial aid, but not included in the bill. I thought that it was basically supposed to be covered by work-study.
