I know that your GPA is lower when it becomes unweighted but I'm wondering exactly how low it could be. It worries me because all of my colleges say they will recalculate my GPA but I have absolutely no inkling of what my unweighted would be. Weighted I have a 3.72. Can anybody explain how I find my unweighted?

weighting gives more weight in the gpa to certain courses, or gives bonus points to specific classes.

unweighted is simplicity itself. If an A is 5 points, a B is 4 points, and so on, simply add up the number of points represented by your transcript and divide by the number of classes you took.

unweighted just means that A is always 4.0, no matter what level, B is always 3.0, no matter what level etc.

If you've taken a lot of weighted classes (honors and AP, usually) then your GPA may be significantly lower unweighted

In the end, I believe it doesn't matter much. From what I heard, your grades are usually taken apart and redone by the colleges so that accurate comparisons can be made.

yeah what system in general do colleges recalculuating grades..like is anything over 90 an A?

so i just did mine out wiht the 5 pts for an A and 4 for a B and so on.. and i got that i have a 4.53? haha did i do something wrongg?

That's out of a 5 point scale, that's why it's a 4.53.

ohh ok.. so is that good then? sorry if i seem very confused its because i am haha

Don't do it on a 5-point scale. Do it on a 4-point scale.

hmm then its a 3.62 =(

my mother thinks the fact that my gpa is what it is and my sat is a 2170 that it will show colleges im an "underachiever". while there is obviously some truth to this, does anyone think it will make a huge deal? or that my sat scores would overshadow my less than desirable gpa?

A 3.62 is not so bad. what schools are you considering?

William and Mary is my top choice but I understand it's a considerable reach, especially since I'm out of state. My other schools are American, Villanova, Boston College. St Joseph's in Philly and Northeastern are my safeties.

I think you could get into William and Mary, but I dont know your schedule or your individual grades or activities, etc. so I'm not sure.

GPA - Weighted: 3.72 Unweighted 3.62
Class Rank: top 9%
Class Size: 245
the school sends a large number of kids to competitive colleges.

Scores:

SAT I Math: 720
SAT I Critical Reading: 710
SAT I Writing: 740

took SAT II's in math 1 and lit but awaiting the scores
my essay was well reviewed by my peers ( all AP classes read everyones essays and rate them at my school)

Never been in a class lower than honors, but my school does not offer many AP's so I'm only able to take AP Lit and AP Calc, I took AP US Hist last year and got a 4 on the test.

What is your rank in your class? A 3.62 can mean many different things, depending on your class rank. If your rank is still high, you don't really need to worry about your GPA.

i forget the number i wanna say 21? out of 245.. but i know its top 9% because thats what my guidance counselor wrote in her recommendation.

I think you're in for William and Mary. Your rank is fine and your EC's and scores are solid. Hey, just wondering, where in Mass are you from? Just wondering if you're near me.

good old Canton, MA. are you near me?

Umm I dont think so..I live in Haverhill, MA near the NH border and I go to a Catholic school in Lawrence. Haha..wow..I'm really cautious with this information aren't I?

haha I know what you mean i signed up for the site today and it was like where are you from so I put down Canton and was like hmm way to attract stalkers so i changed it to Massachusetts haha. clearly i'm not meant to be secretive.
