I was just looking through threads and saw some people saying that taking your only math course in the spring prior to transferring may hurt your chance of admission to the UCs. I'm a political science major with a 3.93 and in the honors program. I applied to ucsc(accepted), ucsb(pending), davis(pending), ucla, and berkeley. Is there any truth to this statement?

Yes.

The UCs prefer to see your math requirement done early. Having it completed early or having at least a pre-req to your math class will make your app more competitive.

There is also a chance that you can receive a “conditional acceptance.” This means that you need to pass your math requirement in order to become fully accpeted.

I finished my math requirement in the Winter. I hope that doesnt hurt me too much.

Well there goes my chances.

For you, lakerfan1991, I would not worry. Your GPA should compensate for the fact that you decided to do math late. However, if you get in (I sure hope you do!!!) you should expect a conditional acceptance.

Yup I’ve heard this is true and not just today.

what about english requirements?

Man, that really sucks. I spoke with a UCLA rep a few months back and he reviewed my course schedule and told me that it looked perfect. I guess he didn’t look too closely. Thats really a letdown.

I dont think it should matter at all. Im in the same situation

What you have heard is correct. Completing the two english requirements as well as the math requirement by the end of the FALL term (in our case, Fall 2009) prior to transfer is important. It DOES have an effect on your admission. That is what a Berkeley counselor told me over the phone a while back.

will i be most likely rejected because of it? I just don’t see why no counselor told me this, I’ve seen at least 5 at my cc and 3 uc reps.

why dont they give us all the same info? i was told it doesn’t matter

I think your GPA is high enough to make you more competitive than those with math complete with lower GPAs. You may get accepted with conditions.

*** this whole thing is ridiculous!
Is that something in the fine print or something?!
Is it a big deal if you’re only taking your 2nd english class this semester and have everything else done before this semester? X_X

Beach,

You may be in a better situation than Lakerfan (though he or she does have a very strong GPA).

The UC recommend that the English courses and Math course be completed by the end of the Fall semester. This does not mean that you will not get accepted. This may mean that you will get accepted under special conditions.

“Students are strongly encouraged to begin taking English composition and mathematics course work early in their academic careers. Early completion of the minimum requirements for admission makes an applicant more competitive for admission spaces available.”

This only means that you are less competitive than those who have the same stats with the english and math complete.

I did not have my math complete until winter session. I am a little worried that they did see those grades but what can we do?

I don’t think that it is that bad of a situation to be in. I was told that not having math done before spring was much worse than not having your second english done. You at least have one english done.

@ Lakerfan,

Do you at least have a pre-req to CALC or STATS (or whatever other transfer IGETC math) complete?

That can help by showing a history of good math grades.

Im in stats right now and have not taken a prerequisite at my cc. UC Santa Cruz sent me an email a few months back asking how I placed into stats and I responded that I took a matriculation test in the summer. I also stated that I had taken and passed Precalculus in high school. In the amial they sent, it said that the other UCs would see this email. I’m a one year transfer(AP Credits & heavy courseloads) so maybe theyll realize that it was more difficult for me to complete my math in the summer & fall semester.

Im so nervous now. I cant believe The UCSB, UCI, and UCLA rep I spoke to in person never mentioned this to me.

I honestly think that you will be fine. They WILL understand that you are taking the right class at the right time because you are a 1 year student. You’ll get in.

Part of me thought it was common sense, having IGETC completed by fall does put you in a more competitive spot. So it is kind of assumed that you should do it as soon as possible. And by as soon as possible, I mean not doing it on the very last semester.

Right now I have completed everything in the igetc except stats which I am taking right now. How would that even effect me when I have already mostly completed everything including all my prereqs when their are other people that are taking classes to finish the igetc. btw my major is polisci too and a very high gpa. As long as we complete the math requirement in the final semester it wont affect admissions

@uclabound
Im in the exact same situation as you. Poli sci major with a high gpa, all pre reqs completed, and stats right now. I hope it doesn’t hurt us too much.

Yeah, its shouldnt lakerfan1991. I just think everyone on here is paranoid about getting rejected
