..........

Most schools that use ED programs have one round of Early Decision. However, some schools employ the use of ED I and ED II. ED I works the same way as would regular ED. If you have your application in by a certain date, you are guarenteed a response to which you must accept if offered admission. ED II comes into play for applicants applying from other schools. If you apply to a school with just ED, and get deferred/rejected, you would then be able to apply to ED II at the school that uses this system. Using ED II, colleges can entice applicants who may not have been as successful at other colleges in the Early Decision round.

so...(sorry for taking over the thread a bit) if you were to apply ED to a school and didnt get in, you could than apply EDII to another school?

for example...brown and vassar? but what about the fact that most ED schools you dont find out until AFTER the EDII date (i mean, only a matter of days but still)

usually the schools that have ed2 have it so they can pick up applicants who don't get into their first ed choice -- this way they can lock in top candidates for whom they may be a second choice school. so i think the timing should work out that ed2 applications are due after most ed1 decisions come out.

re vassar and brown-
brown says they will send ed decisions in early dec. http://www.brown.edu/Administration/Admission/applyingtobrown/index.html (roll over Dec/ed box to see this)
vassar's ed2 applications are due Jan 1. http://admissions.vassar.edu/apply.html#early

you basically should decide ahead of time it you would apply ed2 to a school if you get rejected or deferred from you first choice ed and have everything ready to send in when you get the decision letter. you don't get a lot of time to make that decision once ed decision letter is sent -- but you should have time -- that is the whole point of ed2.

wait that doesn't make any sense
isn't ED supposed to be for only one school and one school only? even for ED2??
im just wondering cause i went to a claremont mckenna session. the guy was making a HUGE point that if you apply ED to more than one school, then you will be in huge trouble (all colleges combine databases or something)
i just want to make sure cause i might apply ED2 somewhere as well...

i think if you get rejected/deferred from ED 1 then you are released from the binding commitment so you'll be able to apply to ED 2 somewhere else.

the idea is that you don't apply to the ed2 school until you find out you aren't accepted ed at the first school. in which case you are no longer under an ed obligation to the first school.

BUT just remember -- if you apply ed2 to another school and are accepted there, you can't then accept an offer of admission that comes regular decision from your first ed school. and sometimes the ed2 decisions come out around the same time as the regular decisions.

but don't take our word for it -- talk to your guidance counselor. usually they have to sign off on your ed applications.
