What's the difference between ED, EA and ID?

I don’t know if this has been asked before, but the Search wouldn’t let me search for it, so I ask:

What’s the difference between ED EA and ID?

In my (perhaps mistaken) understanding, ED and EA are when you apply “early” to a college, just ED is binding where EA is not. Therefore, do ED and EA carry the same weight? (meaning that I know that at most colleges your chances increase if you apply ED because colleges like to hear that they are your first choice. Since you are also applying “early” if you apply EA, do your chances of admission go up as well?)

I had never seen ID before this board. What does it mean?

Do colleges have all three as application options?

Thanks!

I think for the more selective colleges, EA doesn't help as much but ED does. Most schools usually offer one of the two. And i have no idea what 'ID' is.

hehe thanks

Don't apply ED if you also plan to apply for finan aid since you give up your ability to compare FA packages, and may bind yourself to a very large payment.

ID is interim decision, which is EARLIER than regular admissions but later than ED. so you don't exactly have to attend the school you get accepted to as what you would have to do for ED.
