What's the difference between IMAP and Exchange WebMail?

at webmail.princeton.edu there are two options. I'm told all students use IMAP, but what's the difference?

ok I'm not the expert, but - Webmail you access in a browser (IE, firefox). IMAP you access using an email program (Outlook, Eudora).

IMAP is opened in the browser as well.

IMAP uses the standard IMAP e-mail protocol, accessible via an e-mail program or through webmail. It offers basic e-mail services, and it's nowhere near as robust or feature filled as (Microsoft) Exchange, which does more than e-mail (it's a collaboration server, very useful for group projects) and centralises everything on an Exchange Server. I'm not exactly sure of the specific advantages Exchange has over IMAP, but there are many. Exchange is of course much more expensive, which is why we students don't get to use it.

Just found the official answer to your question zant (though the others were quite close ;) )

none of it made any sense to me :o

lol. Exchange is basically a special, fancy-featured version of what we have (IMAP). :D

I'm guessing exchange is like outlook or lotus notes in which they can schedule meetings. Meh
