Whats the difference between MIS, CIS, IS, AND IT????

Im interested in both Technology and business and it seems like all of these has that mixture in both. Whats the difference between Management Information Systems, Computer Information Systems, Information Systems and Information Technology

Different programs have different names at colleges. They are all similar. Just look at what the classes are that make up the major. Make sure you pick one that touches on quite a few technical topics. You want a class on business analysis , programming, databases, etc.

Hope that helps.

Check the courses and curricula. Most are business-oriented, with some semi-technical courses. You may want to consider taking courses in the CS department for operating systems, databases, networks, and security (and their prerequisites) if you want a stronger technical background than typical MIS/IS/IT majors tend to have.

My school had the is folks and the CS folks in the same programming, database and networking classes. The CS folks moved on to more advanced stuff after the first level of course but something like that might be good to look for. That way you’re not getting a watered down version of the courses.

We did assembly language programming as an IS major.

Thanks for all the help! I was thinking of taking information with a concentration in computer science

If your school offers it, then go for the computer science degree. Most people and employers will say that it trumps all four degrees/majors that you mentioned. You can take a minor in business, such as a minor in Accounting, and you’ll be more prepared for employment than majoring in IS/MIS/CIS/IT.

Also I would suggest taking some sort of project management course if possible. I work in IT at a big corporation and we’re always working in project teams. This encompasses everything from requirements gathering to Pat after a release. Interesting stuff.
