What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

I wa just wondering since I see it quite a bit on CC. Which one would matter more and why are they separated?

Unweighted is the raw grade translated into a number. Weighted is when a boost is given for taking honors/IB/AP/advanced classes. Unweighted is typically given more credit because the way people weight grades varies so much, but the course rigor is also an important part of your application. A person with a 3.9 UW and no advanced classes will not be seen as competitive as a person with a 3.7 UW with 6 APs.

If they’re at the same school, of course. The number of advanced classes you’re expected to take depends on how many are available to you.

Thank you! You guys were really helpful! ;
