What's the difference between....

Hi guys,

I see a lot of students apply directly to the PhD program for engineering without having a master's degree, and most of them are usually admitted. Some other students prefer getting their master's degree first before applying to the PhD. I have met some students who were actually admitted into the PhD program but they turned these offers down in order to get their master's first. What is the point of doing something like that? Is it better having MS and PhD than having only PhD?

I was planning to apply for grad schools and I'd love to know the difference between these two strategies. Is it really better to have your master's degree before applying to the PhD?

All answers are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

When you do a PhD course you’ll get your master’s on the way. No one ever gets their PhD without a master’s first. If someone gets admitted for PhD but turning it down and doing master’s first thats because they want the master’s as a boost to get into more prestigious PhD programs than the ones they already have been admitted
