Love these last two posts! Hope you don’t mind a parent stalking this thread. :)

I applied to a lot of schools that gave me free apps and I realize now that it was pointless because I’d never go there. I also applied too schools that didn’t have my major, but I applied because the campus and atmosphere was beautiful. Talk about stupid reasons lol, I could have applied to 10 colleges instead of 20.

Yale - Gilmore Girls
Harvard - Legally Blonde
Princeton - A Cinderella Story (the one with Hilary Duff)
Brown - The OC
Duke - One Tree Hill

Story of my life…

I didn’t apply to UF because I’m an FSU fan. Even though I know nothing whatsoever about football and have never watched a football game in my life, not even the Super Bowl. I just refused to apply to UF.

@lemming101 *****! Those are the funniest reasons ever!

Reason for Applying: Wellesley and Williams = Free Applications. I figured, why not? And now one of them is my top choice. Actually Williams was more one really nice email I got.

Reason for not applying: I was literally almost done with my Tufts application, before the common app opened with the price… 75$. I said nope and didn’t look back. Not that I didn’t apply to Vassar and Yale with 70 dollar applications but 75…

My original final college list before submitting and why I did or did not apply in the end.
- Georgetown - genuine choice.
- GWU - didn’t apply because I got in to Georgetown EA and had always seen GW as a school for the kids who didn’t get in to G’town.
- American - same as 2 except worse.
- UChicago - I can legitimately cite many reasons why I applied and why this used to be my number one choice, but deep down it was /really/ because I thought the Scav Hunt sounded cool. Wasn’t going to apply after getting in to #1 but did for no reason.
- Harvard - applied only because my mom forced me to.
- NYU Abu Dhabi - was planning to apply solely because of the exotic location - in fact, this was also once my top choice. Ended up not applying last minute.
- NYU Shanghai - same as 6 except it was never my top choice.
- Binghamton - was a safety, ended up not applying after #1.

@SAMGinny16 ahhh if only they weren’t true…

My DS wouldn’t apply to:
- Cambridge because he spent a summer there and couldn’t get a “decent orange” or grape jelly. They also put cilantro (which he dislikes) in “every dish”, but they call cilantro “coriander” in England and it took him a month (and several trips to the kitchen, and becoming chummy with the chefs) to finally be able to pinpoint the cilantro in his dinners after being told for a month that they didn’t use it or know what it was.
- A group of top schools because he didn’t care for the prevailing architectural style in the area (California).

DS is a serious scholar, but he also has some unique characteristics he looks for in a top choice school.
- Great food. A nearby creperie is superior (Brown). An Au Bon Pain will do in a pinch (Duke and Harvard). School cafeteria food has to be good and plentiful (Yale and Bama). (BTW, he’s very thin.)
- A Quidditch team. He only applied to two schools that do not yet compete nationally in Quidditch, and both of those schools have Quidditch teams/tournaments on campus.
- Architecture that is attractive and “fits together”. Preferably Gothic (though he likes Bama’s Greek Revival architecture, too).

I applied to Hendrix College because I like Jimi Hendrix (also the app was free).

W & L: Free app!
Yale NUS: Free app, just had to check a box!

Didn’t apply to any upper Californian schools because they’re too close to home.

Applied to:
-UCB and UCLA because they’re super prestigious in my country - even more so than Princeton, Brown, Penn, Cornell, NU, Dartmouth, Duke, etc Should have saved my money because I dislike both schools (mainly due to the overhyped popularity and their GIGANTIC SIZE)

-Columbia because parents assured me that it’s a ‘great’ school. Disliked it after intensive research on the school, but I’ve finished the essays so I submitted the app anyway D:

-CWRU - who doesn’t like free apps? :D

-JHU - actually, there are many logical reasons why I applied here, but one of the stupidest ones is because I like the name ‘Johns Hopkins’. Seems so unique lol. Plus, I want to be a pretentious puppydoodoo who corrects those that left the ‘s’ out of ‘Johns’.

-Rice - it’s Hogwarts.

-Northwestern - the ivy-covered buildings are sickkk

-Princeton: didn’t apply in the end, but I wanted to because ‘Princeton’ just sounds so classy and amazing lol

Didn’t apply to:
-Universities in Hong Kong. Old people always yell at me in HK…

I didn’t apply to Swarthmore because I somehow didn’t like the way it sounded

Anyway, even if it’s a dumb reason, it still allows you to narrow down your college list a bit :)

I applied to St. Andrews solely because I had one more spot on my UCAS app to fill… And now I’m going to attend!

Didn’t apply to UNC-CH because I’ve been a Duke fan for my entire life.

I didn’t apply to Lehigh because it was on a big hill and I didn’t want to walk up and down it everyday
