What's the geekiest, nerdiest college or university?

I am not the kind of person that would go to parties or join a fraternity. I also don't enjoy the sex, drugs and drinking scene. I'd rather go to a study party than a frat party so I'm looking for a university where the students are bright and focus more on studying. I usually prefer the kind of people who would debate on which comic series is better or discus the deeper meaning in the Charlie Brown Halloween Specials or would plan out a design for a robot that could simultaneously play chess and arm wrestle. Yeah, I know, most of things I'm mentioning are far fetched but I hope you get the idea. So what do you think? Would it be MIT? Cal Tech? Harvey Mudd?

My guess would be:

CalTech
UChicago
MIT

But remember these are stereotypes.

but sex, drugs, and alcohol are all so much better with geeks!

Harvey Mudd
Caltech
University of Chicago
MIT
Reed College

The most well-known.

Michigan state, U of Florida, USC, and U of Texas-austin are known for being the nerdiest and most hardcore study schools.

I wish I could like Nova’s comment.

Carnegie Mellon is pretty nerdy. But it’s in a good way (if that makes sense).

I would like to add Arizona State University. I heard they study a lot.

I think the LACs might be right up your alley.

You could google this.

UChicago is famous for the total lack of social lives its students have. In fact, it’s so bad/good there that its President has on several occassions formally asked/begged the students to go out into the city to relax.

Ah…UChicago…nerd central.

Harvey Mudd also has bad social lives (friends see each other not in bars, but the libraries), but more due to the hard work and uninflated grading system, I read. Chicago’s also (in)famous for its rigor.

Caltech/MIT don’t need to be explained. I read that MIT and Mudd both haveexceptionally (top 10) ugly campuses, and that Caltech has exceptionally (top 10) bad teachers. But that came from US News…

I would echo LasMa’s suggestion. Most LACs are smaller, have fewer departments and thus have higher concentrations of STEM majors than their Ivy equivalents. Here are the top LACs in terms of per capita math majors:

Carleton - 11.45%
Williams - 7.2%
Pomona - 6.8%
Swarthmore - 4.2% (not counting engineering majors)
Amherst - 4%
Wesleyan - 3%
Middlebury - 1.8%

I think with the posible exception of Williams, this could almost be a surrogate marker for nerdiness. ;)

Ah…UChicago…nerd central."

I consider myself an 80% academic and 20% social.
Now, I am going to be a party animal at U Chicago. Yay!!!

Reed, Williams, MIT, CalTech, UChicago

^ I disagree about Williams.

I would say CalTech, MIT, Reed, Chicago, Swarthmore.

There’s actually a list of intellectual schools. That list also contains Carleton.

The list is called Nietzschean superwomen/supermen or something like that.

I agree with the schools listed, but I just want to point out that Reed is also known for a big drug scene. Obviously this doesn’t apply to all of the students, but if the OP is looking for a school without a prominent drug scene, Reed might not be the best choice. The academics, however, are some of the best in the nation.

Hey, Thanks Guys! Keep on posting great suggestions!

I have looked into the University of Chicago but I didn’t know the students there were so…er…cool. Also, I would like to mention that us nerds have great social lives, we just have them in our own universe that’s not understandable by “common folk”. A magnificent universe that chooses to reject the mainstream trends of today and chooses to infinitely expand its knowledge!!

Also I don’t want to be to specific but I wanted to add something. Which one of these colleges has, but still hold tight to its nerd power, the best athletics program? I’m joining my schools wrestling team and would like to continue my practice but I still want to be in a university with a mature, educated environment. Any suggestions?

Hope this doesn’t complicate things to much. Thanks!

I have a nerdy friend who toured Cal Tech and came back saying it was too nerdy, even for him. And that’s preeeeetty nerdy. It’s probably right up your alley! Haha :)

Wesleyan isn’t especially jocky, but, whenever one of its teams makes a championship, even the usually non-sports oriented student blog takes notice:
[Wrestling Team Makes Championships – Wesleying](http://wesleying.org/2011/02/21/wrestling-team-makes-championships/)

though Williams doesn’t belong on this list despite its huge proportion of math majors, it has very a very strong sports program… probably the strongest in all of DIII.

i’ve heard that if you go to caltech, you basically have the opposite of the normal college experience. as in, no college experience.

but it’s a very though school to get into and if you’re not really into the whole party scene and enjoy studying more, then this place would be great for you haha.
