What's the hardest major/class in the COE?

In your opinion, what was the hardest major or class you took in the College of Engineering? Now that you look back at it, what do you think you could have done to be more successful in the course?

My vote would be for EECS 427. The content isn’t all that difficult, but the workload is absolutely insane.

i’d guess EE since it seems to be the most math-intensive. in general, the more higher-level maths a course involves the harder it is.

EECS 381, 427, and 470 are all pretty insane. Though I haven’t taken any of those.

Nothing I’ve taken has really been that bad I guess. I think I’d say IOE 518 had the most difficult material of any class I’ve taken, if that’s the standard for hardest we’re using.

It looks like EECS is the hardest major. I’m a future CS major. Should I be worried for EECS 280 and 281?

@mike50, I am a CS student at CoE. Check this out: <a href=“Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan”>Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan; Read page 4. It has “ratings” for some CS classes to give you an idea for how difficult classes are

As for 280 and 281, it depends on how much experience you have going in. I sucked at 280 but I had no idea what I was doing at all.

From my experience and from what I have heard from other students, ChemE 230, IOE 510, ME 382, EECS 281, EECS 470 and AEROSP 305 are amongst the hardest classes in COE.
However, the hardest class I’ve heard is EECS 381, it is extremely tough and more than 50 % of the class get a C or below and it is very time consuming.

If you get DeOrio or Ringenberg for 280 I hear it’s actually not too hard at all because they explain the material so well. But then again, it really depends on how well you understand CS because it’s a big leap from 101.

281 is pretty difficult but I wouldn’t call it the most difficult. 381 is even harder but I don’t think it’s required by any major.

EECS majors are the hardest. Mechanical is pretty hard too. IOE is on the easier side. Not too sure about the other majors because few people do them haha
