i applied to 17. i feel silly, but have excuses. one was early and i was deferred(but its one of those schools where you cant get in if youre deferred unless you cure cancer -- all kinds), two rolling and did early on (inexpensive but not faves), two are uber-safeties, but after realizing i didnt want to go to either of these after id applied, my guidance counselor made me add two more safeties and a target that i like better because the others were all reaches. so somehow its 17 now. 5 also dont have supps, though. but still.
-sigh-

i have a friend thats doing 21 though. no fee waiver.

eh someone from my class did 11 I think thats the most (but theres only 45 kids in my grade)
I did 9 and I felt like it wasnt a big deal at all. I'm probably alone on this but I just didnt think college apps were as hard as everyone made them out to be

ps I already got into 4 so its not like I just did them all half assed and will get rejected.. however I will admit only one is a match/reach really and the rest could be considered safeties or matches.. (would have applied to more reaches but none have my desired major really)

my brother's friend from New Zealand applied to 25 schools
US: all ives and pretty much all top 15 schools
England: Cambridge, Oxford
Australia:..forgot , a couple
New Zealand: university of Auckland
Hong Kong (close to his home): 1 school i think

I applied to 21 but 4 of them are Canadian schools. The reason behind my huge number of US apps was because I need fin. aid. And I'm an intl student.

I did 12 schools :) for the most part, it wasn't that bad actually - I don't know why people all think college applications are so stressful. The only thing that really drove me crazy was the common app essay, I spent 3 months refining that... lol. :(

Most of my friends applied to 10-15.
They just started submitting the Common App to any school with an easy supplement like Case Western or Duke.

For myself, I applied to a grand total of 5, with 1 guaranteed safety, 2 matches, and 2 reaches ;]

At my school, we're not allowed to apply to more than ten. That's because before that rule was instated, people were applying to somewhere around 20 schools. I'll probably apply to 6-8 (next year). I have 8 on my list to visit, and I'll probably veto some during that process.

I knew a few people who did the blanket approach, even applying to schools outside the country (UK, Canada), and invariably the five or six schools that I would be overjoyed at attending were caught in the melee and it come across as pathetic when said persons do not even know the school beyond its acronym.

I applied to the most schools, that I know of, and my number wasn't so bad (just 10!) And I didn't have to PAY for more than half of them... some were free if you applied online or there were fee waivers for applying during a certain time or something.

Not allowed? Haha! How does that work? Is there a punishment?

I applied to one (just JHU) and I was already exhausted. Thank goodness I got accepted. If one was made me exhausted, I couldn't possibly imagine what 10 would do to me.

A friend of mine applied to 18, another to 23. Both had the full support of their own parents (but got raised eyebrows from the rest of ours), and both are of the Class of 2007.

However, my school's record was actually broken last year with the Class of 2006: 60 (count 'em, SIXTY!) APPLICATIONS! This was reported to us by the registrar's office, and even though the people there wouldn't divulge the identity of the person who applied to that many schools, everyone knows for sure that it wasn't someone who ended up anywhere great.
