What's the history major like?

How hard is it in terms of effort/reading? The profs/GSIs? Overall workload?

Depends on the class, but you can usually expect quite a bit of reading and in-depth analysis for the exams (no multiple choice). There is also the 101 seminar requirement (a 35-50 page senior thesis - you can’t get any honors in the department without getting at least an A-, and an A- will only get you cum laude - even with a 4.0 gpa).

The profs are incredible. I haven’t had any bad experiences with any GSIs and they tend to be pretty good. I have found both profs and GSIs to be pretty open and approachable.

As far as workload, it’s fairly heavy. I wouldn’t recommend the major unless you are interested in history. With that said, it’s a great major at the school.

Do you know if the major is more/less work than say Polisci? I’m equally inclined to do both right now.

Also, can you give me an example of the in-depth nature of the exams?

bump this, im also interested

History major here as well (by the way, what’s up CalBear2009?).

I escaped my crushing work load just long enough to be able to type this. OMG, I hear them coming… “No…just a short break…I’m just typing advice…get away from me!!! HELP!! AARRGHH!!!”

bump 10char
