I'm choosing between UBing and UAlbany. I know that HC students can get a first pick of dorms and some classes, and that there are social functions they're expected to attend. Just wondering if anyone has more info about the experience/it's opportunities, and maybe how it would stack up against Binghamton.

Well I know that the honors college housing is beautiful! It’s much more easy to work there too since everyone is a good student and respects those who choose to study over party. Bing is a great school. I was accepted there but I’m doing the honors college at Albany because… well honestly, I just didn’t like Binghamton’s campus… or the area. I couldn’t see myself living there for 4 years.

how is the workload? is the work in the honor program a lot to handle? do you still have time to party and enjoy your weekends? thanks

I am a current member of the Honors College. The hard benefits of the Honors College are basically just priority registration and priority housing. Honors students receive priority registration on almost all classes, which is very nice. I have never missed out on a class because it was full. I do not live on campus, so don’t know much about the housing, but it seems most students do not continue living in honors housing.

The soft benefits are small class sizes, enthusiastic professors, motivated classmates, and a more intellectual culture (something UA as a whole is completely lacking).

The requirements are 4-6 honors courses, a senior thesis, and attending presentations (only required if you want to stay in honors housing). The workload is quite a bit more than regular classes. Many courses require a tremendous amount of reading. In terms of grading, however, the classes are not “harder” on average. The professors realize most of the students are motivated, and give out a higher proportion of A’s than your typical class.

As an aside, I would highly recommend Advanced Into to Psychology with Professor Rosellini.
