whats the lowdown on GW?

if anyone has visited GW or is a student/grad there, what are your impressions of the school? (ie. admission, academics, reputation, social scene, campus setting, facilities, student body makeup, financial aid, scholarships etc.). Do people seem to love it or hate it there?

my friends have told me it's an extremely fun school to be at. it's got good academics although the price is a bit high. tuition alone is around 36 thousand so all together all the costs total to about 51 grand a year.

yeah DC is fun and everything but its one of the most expensive schools in the US.

i visited and was actually pleasantly surprised. our tour guide was kind of new, to put it politely, but it actually helped us get a really good idea of what the school's like.
it seems like it has its share of macho, obnoxious football guys and abercrombie elite, but it's also very possible to manipulate around them and still have a great experience. the school itself seems like it offers a lot of opportunities. our guide said that most students have 1 or 2 internships going on at a time- great for public policy. at the same time, though, you sacrifice the community feel you'll get at a small liberal arts school, but i guess that's a given. the facilities seemed pretty nice. but, what i found the most impressive was the flexibility in terms of what you study. i visited gtown right after and was really disappointed by the fact that you usually have to find your school and take most classes within it. at gw, you can do almost anything. i have a friend going their next year who's in a joint poli sci/journalism major program, with minors in chinese and pre-law. they also have great speakers, and i feel like the school's slowly gaining a lot of prestige.

GW is SO MUCH FUN!!! That is so true. There's so much going on and DC is a very exciting place to live. The "obnoxious football" group is actually very small. GW doesn't even have a football team although it has a baseball and basketball team. People aren't all that jock-ish at GW, but that is just my opinion. Even people in the fraternities are down-to-earth and are normally fairly diverse. I don't want to overly idealize students at GW because there's plenty of jerks but I wanted to comment on that.

The schools are great, especially the Elliot School. The advisors are very flexible, and GW doesn't have long lines or weird policies because it is private and the advisors can basically do whatever they want. There's not too many long lines or bureacracy at GW like I thought.

I will be living in Thurston next year, which is 4 blocks from The White House. It's very lively. There's freshmen everywhere around that dorm, and it's like a giant party. People love it. And if you are a guy, GW is amazing because the guy/girl ratio is like 40/60 and there's a large gay population. The girls are very beautiful and the guys are just kind of average haha. People are RICH. People are sooo rich. A lot of times they don't even realize it. Lots of prep-schoolers. It's pretty easy to find your group at GW, but to succeed here you need a very open mind because it's extremely diverse and politically correct. It's also very liberal.

I think the campus is nice and residential-feeling, but I think anyone can visit and decide that for themselves.

Admissions is getting more and more selective. Lots of students here are Emory, Boston College, and Georgetown rejects. Plenty of people are on scholarship, though, because GW throws out lots of merit scholarships for good students. The student body is very interesting. People are well-travelled and open-minded. There's a very cosmopolitan atmosphere and everyone is opinionated politically. They are hardcore about politics. It's funny.

That gives a pretty good idea of how competitive GW is for admissions. If you apply ED normally it's not all that difficult, though.

not worth the money

Go to GW if you want a degree in some kind of disipline relating to politics or law; GW can help you get some great internships in those careers. If you are intrested in law, you can apply to their BA/JD program; GW has great law school, and for the program you don't need to take the LSAT, but a 3.7 GPA is required for admission into the law school.

My s attends. He was accepted to Bucknell and Boston College and others (so it's not just full of rejects from BC, etc!), but chose GW. He loves it - first rate profs overall (every school has its klunkers, but in general he has really loved his profs). Lots of energy, lots of interesting people to talk to.

Unlike a previous poster, S was not even aware there was a football team. He says the athletic scene is not a bit deal, and neither is the frat stuff, even though they're there.

He says the strongest programs include IR (naturally), psychology, interior design, poli sci, journalism/communications, and languages. While they have lots of dance programs, they either don't have, or are weak in, fine arts (other than pottery), and film.

Most people don't pay the full price, so it's a little academic for a lot of people. Good luck.

Wow.. Iam glad I found this board. Iam currently a campus police officer in Maryland but am scheduled to attend GW for criminal justice. My wife works there so Iam familiar with the area but does anyone know anything about the CJ program? I know its one of the tops in the nation but have not met anyone who attended CJ.

"i have a friend going their next year who's in a joint poli sci/journalism major program, with minors in chinese and pre-law."

how can you minor in pre-law. isnt it just having an advisor help you with requirements for law school? i dont understand.

personally, if i lived in michigan, california, virgnia, there is no way i would spend dinero to go to GW

hey thanks for all the input everyone i appreciate it. also...

is GW worth the money for an upper middle-class family?

what is the quality of the integrated 7 yr ba/md program there (b/c i plan on applying to that) (ie. admissions, financial aid)?

also, is the regular pre-med program strong there?

I'm going to be a freshman at GW this fall and can't wait. Just got back from orientation and it was great, I think it's got to be one of the best in the country- just really well done. I am paying the full price (no aid or merit) and think it's worth it for sure.

I am going to either do a second major or do a minor in criminal justice and I hear it's a good program, but that's about all I know.

I'll back all of this up :)
