Out of 4.0 scale, what is the lowest GPA they typically accept? I'm a junior and because of my freshman and sophomore years, my GPA is about a 3.6. I'm just worried because I think that my EC's and my Reccs will be great, but my grades won't be stellar. I admit that I have had 2 C grades during sophomore year and I plan to have straight A's this year to make"make up" for it.

Like many schools, Duke does not have a cut off for GPA. The best strategy would be to improve your grades this year and make the other parts of your application strong. A GPA is considered within the context of the school and courseload.

Don't worry. You can totally bring up your GPA. But I wouldn't stress over it unless its something you can do with little pain lol I think I'd concentrate on SATs and ECs. I know my GPA is low but I really tried hard on my SATs and sometimes colleges will see really good SATs and an average GPA (in hard classes) and not hold it against you.
good luck either way though- and try not to let junior year stress you out!

Generally, a high class rank, high SATs, and a low GPA will just tell adcoms that you go to a very hard high school.

quick question? For example would a person with a 3.0 GPA attempt to attend duke?

Thanks everybody. That makes me feel a whole lot better.

Julian.Nwoko:

depends what school he or she goes...if he go to andover or exeter..yeah...

I am a senior at one of the best public schools in the country (Bronx Science) and my courseload is

A.P Chem
A.P Calc AB
A.P Micro
A.P English Language
Linear Algebra/Differential Equations
Biology Projects (INTEL STS Research)
MAcroeconomics at a local College

My avg thus far has been a 92. However I feel this term I will get an 80 in Biology Projects (apparently my research apaper is not so good). In term os other classes I am confident I can average a 93.

WIll this 80 screw me over>

What if I publish a research paper in a journal? Will that make up for a low grade?

bump bump bump.

It isn't exactly something that you "make up" for by doing something else. Low grades happen from time to time, one or two won't keep you out of Duke. (though of course getting a paper published can't hurt)

Duke students do not as a general rule have 4.0's in high school. They understand that you're coming from Bronx Science, that you've taken a challenging courseload, and that you have some excellent extracurricular accomplishments.

If something should be a problem for you, this probably won't be it.
