When I was a freshman, below Algebra 1, was Introduction to Pre-Algebra and simply Pre-Algebra. These days, it's called Integrated Math 1 & 2. Interestingly enough, I actually know quite a few juniors who are in the latter class.

After telling this to a few other high school students, they're astonished. They frequently tell me that having a mathematics level below Algebra in a high school campus is astonishing.

Are the levels available at my school surprising to you? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

The lowest math we have in our high school (I go to a 6-12 school) is Algebra 1. Regardless of if you are ready you are taking Algebra 1, that being said most of our freshman take Geometry or Algebra 2.

Wow, so, you’re telling me that 6th graders take Algebra 1 at your school? Very interesting. Over here, if you’re a ninth grader in Algebra, you’re considered above average.

What halcyonheather said…My school is broken down into 6-8 and 9-12. I think I know one 6th grader who took Algebra 1, most people take it in 8th grade, 9th grade at the latest.

Correction: We have foundations of algebra, then pre algebra, then algebra 1. The foundations is basically for farm kids who have missed so much school and need to catch up.
Welcome to the country.

Pre-Algebra and/or CAHSEE Prep (because it’s funny, what the questions that they don’t get are)

In Pre-Algebra, a question I’ve seen is what is “x%” of some number? Oddly, the Calculus BC teacher has taught it at the same time as Calculus AB, Honors Precalculus, and AP Statistics.
