The College Board and US News and World Report are great search engines for colleges. But since there are nearly 4000 schools out there, and these two engines contain less than half of them, is there a better engine or source?

Look in to Princeton review Counselor-o-Matic.

Of course Princeton and College Board are the most effective sources, but I will also recommend you studentsreview.com, here students grade there institutions, of course it might be not very objective but still it can help you. Also there is the information on job placement.

collegedata.com

Keep in mind no search engine is perfect and can only be used as a guide. We had a bad experience with counselor-o-matic when S was searching for schools. The one school he was most familiar with would not come up in his search no matter how we played with the search trying to figure out why it did not show up. He is majoring in engineering, and planned to apply to the Univ of MN Twin Cities, as a safety mind you, but for some reason engineering was not listed as a major there. I reported it but not sure if it got fixed...

Anyway, just keep in mind that the data on search engines is only as good as the data entered into it and even if based on other reliable data, there is still room for human or other error, and always double check everything with the actual schools.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I will certainly use your advice. I have come across significant inconsistencies between what the Fiske guide reported and a college's revised figures. Particularly with a small school, changes in percentages can be pretty dramatic.
