I'm in my junior year and am planning to self study AP Eng lang and APUSH.

But what is the point of it since my GPA isn't affected?

Is there any benefits of self-studying?

Thanks

Passing an AP exam will potentially earn you college credit at the college/university you end up going to, which saves you a lot of money that you would have to spend on classes. That’s the main benefit. It also shows a level of discipline that colleges will take note of, and you can potentially learn a lot through studying college-level material in high school.

So it wouldnt help me in the college admission process?

I want to self study these AP exams to make up for my unrigorous courses - I only have 2 AP classes, and the rest are regular classes.

Right now, I feel very unchallenged and unsatisfied in my regular classes and I want to convey this to the colleges I apply to next year by self studying APs on the side.

So should I self study?

Thankyou

I feel the same as you do about wanting to make up for the lack of rigor in your course schedule. I didn’t even know I could take more than AP U.S. History and AP Physics B in my Junior year at my school, but it was already too late to transfer into another AP. Now I can’t take all of the APs I wanted to take by the end of high school. I think you should self-study ones that you find interesting (I’m considering self-studying AP Statistics or AP Physics C Mechanics into next year), but I wouldn’t self-study anything that requires a ton of time or that you aren’t fairly interested in. I could never self-study for a history course, especially because I have to devote about 2 hours each day on APUSH, but if you really the subjects you should do it.

It would definitely help, but not by a very large amount. I’ve never personally seen evidence that colleges don’t really consider AP scores that much in admissions, but I’ve read many posts on these forums saying this.

Especially if you feel unchallenged, you should definitely go for it. It can only help.

The point of self-studying for most is the same reason for taking an AP class: college credit.
